The Camacho Corojo 11/18 is a vitola you don't see that often anymore..a perfecto. For those that don't know this vitola is thick in the middle and tapered at the ends so that it has 3 different ring gauges: 48 (head) x 54 (middle) x 48 (foot). It has a length of 6". On to my review....
ATMOSPHERE: Smoked after lunch at my local B&M while reading the latest issue Cigar magazine. Paired with peach iced-tea.
PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: woody, spicy.
Appearance: This one had the new 2007 packaging which is a beautiful gold-leaf band with brown and black accents plus small additional band on the foot. Dark reddish-brown corojo wrapper. Unique bulbous perfecto shape. A couple of small veins but otherwise perfect.
Feel: perfect resistance when squeezed.
Pre-light draw: a little tingly with hints of spice. Foreshadowing how strong this powerhouse was going to be
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Peppery but harsh for the first half inch. Settled down for awhile afterwards. Peppery and fruity for the first half. I think the fruit flavor I was tasting was apricots. Harsh again at re-light (see below). Changed to earthy and woody in the second half, still with the hint of fruit.
Strength: FULL bodied! Started to feel this one in my stomach about half way through making me wish I had ordered the steak for lunch. Make sure you don't plan to operate heavy machinery for awhile after this one
Feeling: perfect for chewing on while smoking.
Scent of smoke: Fruity, burning wood (cedar?)
Heat: none on fingers or mouth
Draw: Effortless, however went out suddenly as soon as it reached the thick part in the middle of the cigar. This wouldn't have been a big deal except that is was very harsh again on the re-light for another 1/2 inch. Burn was a little uneven at points but no correction needed.
Finish: Very long. Tingling sensation in first half. Very dry after that...needed to drink a lot of fluids while smoking.
OTHER:
Ash: Mostly grey with black specks. A little on the flaky side but didn't fall off.
Duration: Long-lasting smoke! Smoked until just under 1" left which took roughly 1 hr and 45 min. Almost 2 hrs with this strength!! You should get an award if you can nub this one
CONCLUSION:
Not for the faint of heart! I typically like strong cigars but this was a little too much for me. It had a lot going on in terms of flavor complexity (fruit, wood, pepper, earth) but for me this was overshadowed by the harshness at lightings and the sheer strength. If I were to smoke one of these again I would definitely do it after a large dinner and pair it with a stronger drink. I also did not like that it went out in the middle. The other major drawback for me was the price. I enjoy the regular Camacho Corojo (which is also very strong) much more and it is almost half the price. I would not buy one of these again myself but would try one (after a BIG dinner) if I was given one.
FINAL RATING: 6.3/10
Cheers!
