Pros: very unique flavors/aromas
Cons: burn/construction issues

Avalon Juke Series Blue
5x50 Robusto

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on a warm evening on my back patio paired with a root beer and the D’Backs/Red Sox game on the radio.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Slightly sweet and earthy smell from wrapper. Nice sweet (plum) smell from foot.

Appearance: Wrapper rolled over end of foot in a unique way. I cut this before lighting. Mottled dark and light wrapper. Much darker nearer the foot (almost dark chocolate maduro color). Slightly veiny and one noticeable patch.

Feel: Good resistance to squeezing.

Pre-light draw: Earthy and slightly sweet, plum taste on pre-light draw.

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Bitter chocolate and nutty (chestnut) to start. After about an inch I started to get some of the meaty flavors I got from the Honeyboy. I would describe it as the taste you get from grilled chicken skin that is slightly burnt….very nice. Hints of the plum sweetness came through as well. After about 2” I detected some interesting spice flavor (nutmeg?) and a hint of leather. A got a little more of the chestnut flavor when exhaling through the nose.

Strength: Medium, leaning towards to mild side in terms of strength but full of flavor.

Feeling: Good resistance to chewing.

Scent of smoke: An amazing cornucopia of scents!!! It reminded me of the smells from the kitchen when someone is cooking a holiday meal: baked bread, roasted meat, nuts, sweetness. It was hard to identify these b/c I could not separate them.

Heat: None at all.

Draw & Burn: This was the one weak point of this cigar. The draw was a bit tight and the burn uneven. After about 1.5” into the smoke a heard a cracking sound and a ¾” crack opened up in the wrapper. After this the wrapper flaked a lot around the crack and fell on my lap. I don’t think it hurt the flavor, however.

Finish: Pleasant medium length finish: creamy, nutty with a hint of the burnt taste.

OTHER:
Ash: Salt and pepper in color and pretty flaky but held OK.

Duration: Nubbed in just under 1 hr.

CONCLUSION: A veritable medley of flavors and scents that I thoroughly enjoyed!! Very complex in flavor. I liked it much better than the Juke Ebony in terms of the flavors. The construction/burn issues took away a bit from the smoking experience so I would like to try another one to see if I just got a bum stick. I would definitely buy more for myself and recommend to others, although I could see some not liking the burnt flavors and aftertaste.

FINAL RATING: I would give this an 8 in terms of flavors and a 4 in terms of construction/.burn. Since flavor is much more important to me I will give an overall:
7.0/10

Cheers!

Rob

Pros: Since I make 'em I dont' think my comments would be objective
Cons:

We recommend that you light the folded foot without cutting it. Burning a bunch of wrapper leaf at the start gives the smoke a "kick start" of flavor. It's kind of like splashing a bit of vodka on the top of your screwdriver.

Pros: Very unique taste
Cons: crazy burn that you for some reason deal with.

You nailed it on the head with the burnt chicken skin. With that said, its somehow very dang good? I had some major burn issues but I did not let it rest at all in the humidor. Overall a great Cigar that leaves you wanting more.
