Blind Tasting Panel Cigar #108
5x50 Robusto
Maduro?
ATMOSPHERE: Smoked in the morning paired with vitamin water, Grateful Dead on my iPod and a few articles to read for my next science post

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Earth/dirt and cocoa from wrapper. More sweet cocoa from foot.
Appearance: Slight box press. Veiny, slightly rough, chocolate brown wrapper. A lighter colored maduro perhaps?
Feel: Good resistance to squeeze.
Pre-light draw: Mostly earth/hay, not very sweet.
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Started out with a tiny bit of leather, creamy chocolate and some nuttiness. About 1/3 of the way in became much more nutty, especially when exhaled through the nose. Reminded me of peanut butter. So combined with the chocolate I had a vague recollection of a Reese’s peanut butter cup..kid you not! The chocolate flavor died out after about 1/3 and I got mostly nuts and buttered toast flavors. Very nice! However, flavors got a little unpleasant with about 1” left.

Strength: Mild end of the medium scale.
Feeling: Good resistance to chew.
Scent of smoke: Cocoa, maple wood, and roasted nuts.
Heat: A little bit on the fingers in the final 1/3.
Draw & Burn: Perfect draw and burn throughout. Excellent amount of smoke. Cap unraveled on me a tiny bit.
Finish: Medium length with a tangy, smoky flavor. Had a hard time describing the flavor exactly.
OTHER:
Ash: Grey/white ash that held very well (see picture).

Duration: Smoked to about 1” left in about 45 min. Put out at this point because flavors began to get a little unpleasant.
CONCLUSION: I really enjoyed this smoke up to about the 1” mark. Very mice milder tasting maduro(?) with very enjoyable flavors and a perfect burn. Reminded me a bit of the Carlos Torano 1959. Would like to try one of these again to see if the unpleasantness at the end was just an anomaly or if I smoked it too fast. But I think it is definitely worth a try because of the nice flavors for the majority of the smoke and I will give it a good rating mostly because of that.
FINAL RATING: 8.2/10
Cheers!

This was a decent looking medium brown wrapped stick. The wrapper had some veins visible and had a rough appearance to it like sandpaper almost. Not bad but just not a smooth wrapper. It had a few soft spots but for the most part it was solid. There was a small tiny hole in the cap. I took a prelight draw and got some stromg barnyardish flavors and some musty flavor from it.
I toasted and lit this puppy up and sat back and smoked it like a champ. I got a little bit of spicyness from this one and some cocoa. That was it, nothing more. It did go from mellow to med and back again from start to end. I was not overly impressed by this one. It did have some potentiol though. It seemes that some age on this would definately help out. The burn was pretty good, I did have to touch it up once. The draw was very nice all the way through. The ash held on tightly, ans was a dark grey. I did get some heat from the last half. It may have been from humidity, but I felt it on my lips. The finish was of a light slipy/smokey flavor, which was very mellow. I would rate this at a solid 6 on the ICRS system. I would love to find out what this was.

Blind review. 5 x 50 Maduo Robusto.
ATMOSPHERE: Smoked outside in the evening paired with fresh Alabama air.
PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Pleasant smell. A little sweet, nice pre-smoke smell but a not a ton of auroma.
Appearance: Nice. Good looking cigar.
Feel: Solid. Nicely packed. Nicely oiled and ready to smoke.
Pre-light draw: Almost nothing on the palate, a slight sweet taste.
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: A medium sweet taste, very nice. Got a little harsh near the end.
Strength: Medium to Full, but nicely done.
Feeling: This cigar was in great shape, nice Robusto.
Scent of smoke: A little sweet. My wife and daughter likee it, so this must be a good cigar.
Heat: Very little, next to none!
Draw & Burn: Nice burn. One relight.
Finish: A little harsh near the end, but still good.
OTHER:
Ash: Good ash, very solid in construction!
Duration: Smoked until about 1” remaining in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes.
CONCLUSION: Nice cigar. The flavor was solid throughout, I would do one of these again!
FINAL RATING: 7.0 - I like it!

Nice deliberte draw.
|
|
Cons:

|
This cigar was a maduro. The wrapper and foot have a nice sweet plum smell that I associate with maduro. The wrapper was nice and even.
I cut the cap and it cut cleanly. It had a nice deliberate draw, my favorite draw.
First Third: This cigar has a simple maduro flavor and was mild. I noticed that this cigar does not product lots of smoke.
Second Third: Just like the first third, I am quite surprised at how little smoke I am getting.
Third Third: Talk about consistency, this cigar was the same all the way through.
Overall: This is what I would call a standard maduro. Nothing bad about it and nothing particularly spectacular. I would say you could use this cigar as a standard candle for maduros. It's not for me, but others may find it pleasant. I would recommend this to a beginner smoker.

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Leather, nuts
Scent at Foot: Same
Wrapper: Very veiny and toothy. Wrapper had a noticeable tear about an inch from the head
Feel: Firm
Tongue: Spicy
Flavor on Draw: Musty flavor that left a tingle on the tip of my tongue
Smoke
Taste: Bold, spicy, earthy. Very “in your face.”
Flavor Changes: Once, about 1/3 in
Strength: Full
Scent of Smoke: Musty
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: None to speak of
Draw: Nearly perfect
Finish: Long, dry
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Noticeable nic kick
This was a rough looking cigar that started out true to its appearance. The first few puffs smacked me in the face with a bold, spicy flavor. Near the 1/3 point, the flavor smoothed out a bit and I picked up on a toasty earthiness that, to me, was quite pleasant. Just over halfway through the cigar I got up to let the dog out and had an immediate head rush. The flavor may have mellowed a bit, but the nicotine was going full-force. Despite the strength of this cigar, it didn’t give off any bitter flavors until I reached the last inch.
Final Rating: 8

Nasty at the end
|
|
Nice dirt smell at prelight with a scent of tea at the foot. Easy cut, light and draw.
Nice size and appearance with a firm body. Started out medium flavored with a tang of spice arriving half way through. Ash was over 2 inches before it dropped. Half way the wrapper slpit so it might have suffered a bit in its travels.
Overall a pleasant smoke until the last 2 inches-just got too nasty to continue.
I rated this a 6 as a stong 'good' recommendation

Easy smoke
|
|
Cons:

Flavors didn't really work together
|
|
This was a nice robusto, a few blemishes on the wrapper. The pre-light draw was nice. Lots of flavors. Easy draw.
1/3 - Lots of flavors but they were working against each other. Like wood and pepper were fighting to be the main flavor. This caused a bit of sharpness.
2/3 - Nice burn and draw. Flavors still fighting. The smoke is beginning to get harsh.
3/3 - Lots of harsh spice but still a nice draw and burn.
Overall, This cigar preformed beautifully but the flavor just wasn't right. I think with more time and a simpler blend, this could be a shining cigar!

Great Profile; great construction
|
|
Cons:
|
a bit hot at the end
|
|
Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: meaty, spicy, highly aromatic warpper, probably a corojo based on past experience of similar aroma
Scent at Foot: woodsy
Wrapper: beautifull brown wrapper with a few large veins
Feel: feels just right, although one soft spot at the head
Tongue: a bit of spice
Flavor on Draw: woodsy, cedary
Smoke
Taste: nice flavor of spices, wood, amd some tangy overtones
Flavor Changes: very similar profile all throughout
Strength: med-full
Scent of Smoke: pleasant aromatically, and lots of smoke
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: some heat on the lips and fingers towards the end
Draw: perfect
Finish: long finish with spice and tangy notes
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: This cigar had a great burn, great construction, greay ash held on amazingly ( I was actually thinking of going for the long ash thing with this one ) broke off at about 2/3 length.
Overall my impression is very possitive. I will def buy this cigar once I know what it is.

Good yard Gar
|
|
Cons:
|
Lacking in flavors
|
|
A rustic mottled veiny dull brown robusto. Resembled old leather.
The pre light draw was of grass & hay.
All in all a light bodied blend of woody leather with light pepper.
The finish was rather short with a woody twang.
The ash was really dark reminiscent of cubans.
Imo a bundled stick, nothing remarkable but good.

Good volume of smoke. Good construction. Interesting flavor that is not overpowering but interesting.

PRESMOKE
Scent of Wrapper: Not very aromatic. I picked up a slightly salty sweaty kind of scent.
Scent at Foot: Similar to wrapper, but more faint.
Appearance: Robusto shape, but short, 5 inches x 50 ring. Construction appears to be very respectable.
Wrapper: Fairly smooth, slight sheen, small veins. Fairly thick wrapper. Well put together, wrapper stays in place well. No issues or complaints about the wrapper at all.
Feel: Fairly consistent from head to foot, firm. Slight soft spot near the head.
Tongue: No tingle. Slightly sour? taste.
Flavor on Draw: No flavor observed.
SMOKE
Lit up moderately easy. Fine draw, nearly perfect. Noticed a bit of spice when it lit up - dissipated quickly.
1st Third:
Flavor has some mild grass notes, like hay or straw. Enjoyable flavor. Reminds me a lot of the Bucanero Classico Maduro. Similar grassy notes with a bit of sourdough flavor. Perhaps a bit of a toasty, or roasted nut flavor buried in there somewhere. I find it somewhat complex, more so than most of the cigars I've had recently.
Strength: The flavor is mild-medium to medium.
The feeling (or nicotine strength): No nicotine effects noted.
Scent of the Smoke: Grassy with a bit of sourdough. Aromatic. I think it smells good in the room.
Heat on fingers and mouth: Nothing observed.
Draw: Excellent draw. Just the right amount of resistance. Nearly perfect!
Finish: Short finish. Not a heavy flavor at all.
Other: Pleasant flavor that rolls well. Flavor is fairly mild, but it holds my interest. I think there is some complexity to the flavor. It has a couple of uncommon flavors that I like. In other words, its taste is somewhat unique...not your typical ho-hum every day flavors. It is something that you might seek out for its particular flavor profile.
Consistent, even burn line. Wrapper is holding up well - not wanting to unravel. Produces abundant smoke easily. Short finish. Leaves you wanting another puff.
I like this cigar. It has a unique flavor that is a great change of pace from the typical cigars out there. I think this would make a great lunch hour smoke - not too heavy and I don't think it would make anyone nic sick. I could imagine people inquiring what cigar I was smoking because it has a unique aromatic scent. Grassy sourdough scent. Some might find it pungent, I don't know.
Construction is very good - probably 8.0. The flavor is enjoyable, and unique - I place it at 7.2. Overall, I would rate it at about a 7.5, which is Very Good.

Pros:

Good flavor and construction
|
|
Cons:
|
Little tarry at the end
|
|
PRE-SMOKE:
Scent wrapper: strong tobacco
Scent foot: more of the same
Appearance: deep brown color with several veins thoughout the length
Feel: firm, smooth
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: coffee, leather and nuts
Strength: Medium-bodied.
Feeling: a littel rugged but to be expected from a maduro
Scent of smoke: woody, nice scent to it
Heat: None.
Draw & Burn: very nice draw to it... easy smoking cigar
The first third provided a wood, nutty and earth flavor to it
The second third: developed a bite as if from pepper to it, it developed a slight coffee taste along with leather undertones to it
The last third while still enjoyable at this level it did end up getting more tarry of a taste to it and that took away from the enjoyment of the latter part of the cigar.
Finish: Short, hint of pepper to it but could have been the tar buildup...
Firm ash to it... burned evenly, no touch up needed
I would definitely buy this cigar again, depending on the price of course, but it provided an enjoyable smoke that had more depth to it than others I have smoked recently.

Pre Smoke
Scent of Wrapper: So far with all of the cigars I have reviewed the wrappers all have had a similar scent... and this one was not much different... somewhat of a fresh hay smell.
Scent at Foot: Very similar to the wrapper.
Appearance: The wrapper was a fairly dark brown color, possibly a maduro wrapper. There were some fairly prominent veins that stood out.
Feel: Very firm but not rock solid.
Tongue: No prominent flavors when pressed against the tongue.
Flavor on Draw: Slight sweet taste on the lips but nothing that stood out on the draw.
Smoke
Taste: Earthy/Woody (it reminded me of a Mahogany type of wood). I picked up a very slight peppery taste about 3/4" into the cigar. About 1.5" into the cigar I picked up a Dark Chocolate taste with the pepper subsiding. It picked up a little bit of the pepper again about half way through.
Strength: I would say this is a solid Medium.
Feeling: Very smooth smoke, nice and relaxing.
Scent of Smoke: I call it the Hearty Cigar Scent. The cigar itself does not produce a bunch of smoke but the inhale does.
Heat: I picked up the heat on the fingers with about 2.5" left on the cigar.
Draw: Nice easy draw, almost perfect, just the right amount of resistance.
Finish: Short, somewhat earthy.
Other: This one did not light easily for me and took a little bit of effort to get it started. The ash was very firm, only two ashings during the smoke with a dark grey color. The burn got a little bit uneven with about 1.5" left in the smoke.
This cigar exceeded my expectations upon inspection of the cigar and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am very curious to find out what this one is so I can pick up some more of them!
I would rate this cigar a solid 8 on the IRCS scale.

Scent of Wrapper: A slight scent of barnyard.
Scent at Foot: Immediately after the cello was removed, I got a nice sweet and strong tobacco scent. A few minutes later that faded and I picked up a barnyard scent.
Wrapper: Velvety dark maduro looking wrapper with noticeable veins. Some discolored spots (water?) on one side near the head of the cigar.
Feel: Firm with some give at the foot. One harder spot near the band area.
Tongue: Tingly with a touch of bitter spice.
Flavor on Draw: Sweet flavor with a hint of red pepper spice.
Taste: Espresso and dark roasted coffee bean flavors with the occasion dark chocolate. Some spice. In the last 1/3 picked up some cedar flavors.
Strength: Medium
Feeling: Satisfied
Scent of Smoke: Couldn’t pick up much scent since there was a breeze.
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: None
Draw: Deliberate
Finish: Dark roasted coffee beans with a hint of cayenne pepper on the throat.
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Enjoyable smoke, but nothing special.

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: solid leather and rich tobacco
Scent at Foot: lighter than wrapper, mostly the same, maybe a hint of sweetness?
Wrapper: many smallish veins, quite rough (toothy?) no noticable rips or anything
Feel: solid with no softspots
Tongue: a lot of spice with a touch of sweetness (reminded me of the smell of the foot)
Flavor on Draw: seemed pretty standard to me, rich tobacco and spice
Smoke
Taste: very very strong right after light, pepper/spice hit you hard, then it mellows out a bit towards the middle to a very nice flavor/strength balance
Flavor Changes: from spice to sweet spice with maybe some choco flavors somewhere around 1/4 in --- very very nice IMO
Strength: med - full
Scent of Smoke: too windy to tell really but when it calmed down it was pretty pleasing
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: stayed nice and cool until i was ready to drop it out
Draw: a bit tight for my liking but by no means bad
Finish: pleasing but i drank lots of ice water with this one
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: more water than normal, probly meaning the smoke was dryer
this was a very nice stick with good construction, it seemed a bit rough looking but appearances don't matter, it burned well and had a nice long ash
i enjoyed this one a lot, and will give it a solid rating of 8 and would definately recommend it to someone who wants a full bodied smoke with some nice flavors
