Description: I’ve never put in my two cents on any cigar review so forgive me if I botch this entirely. Dan, at my B&M (Richmond Avenue Cigars) in Houston got in the Camacho Triple Maduros and there wasn’t a way in the world they weren’t going to find a resting place in my home humidor. The box I was interested in ( 11/18s ) had one lone cigar missing so I snapped up the rest. Have to say I really like the new box these 3XMaduros sleep in. Camacho has done a really good job in up styling the various box presentations and this box is no slouch.

So this first one I smoked never actually made it to my humidor. Just couldn’t wait. The cigar is appointed nicely with a fairly large (Gurkha style) black, silver, and blood red-lined label and a smaller silver and black band at the foot. The dark maduro wrapper is just rustic enough with one or two small veins coursing the length but and oily sheen that looks great next to a stick of chocolate. At 6”, this figurado is tapered at both ends going from around a 46 to a 50 ring gauge at the midpoint.

I tried to evaluate the cigar using Colin’s cigar rating system and when I took in that first deep scent of the wrapper, it had an earthy sweet nose like after watering down some newly placed mulch. The foot gave off a fresh moist barnyard aroma. The feel of the cigar was pretty firm but not rock hard and consistently so from head to foot. You know there’s some major tobacco in that there Ceegar. I used a Palio to make my cut and then tipped the head with just the flat end of my tongue. I ended up doing it a couple time because I got this little electric charge of anticipation. I might have imagined it but I seemed to pick up some sort of spice that was a mixture of both pepper and cinnamon. The pre-light draw was perfect; just enough resistance to call it “deliberate” but not over tight at all. Along with the smooth draw came a toasty caramel flavor that made me throw down the evaluation sheet and get this baby lit.

I wasn’t disappointed by the first smoke to envelop my pallet. It conformed nicely to the pre-smoke flavors dishing out and heady woody smoke with hints of clove. The initial rush yielded to a chocolate and barely roasted coffee bean. If you imagine sucking on a couple of unground coffee beans, you can get a sense of the taste. Those same flavors as well as a great tobacco taste stayed with the cigar at least through the first third. From the very beginning, this cigar made some serious smoke. It was creamy yet thick enough to encompass the entire mouth and you could almost feel the smoke fall and then caress the tongue and pallet. I like to exhale every third or fourth puff through my nose. When I did this during the first third of the cigar, I got a nice hint of the spices but it wasn’t harsh at all. The burn was excellent through this portion with a solid gray white ash. It held on without any trouble till I tapped off about close to two inches into the smoke.

As I moved into the next third, the taste got quite a bit sweeter and the caramel / clove turned nuttier and hints of butterscotch came through. At this point, as I headed toward the meatier part of the cigar, the burn did give me a drop of trouble. I’m not sure if it was because it tasted so great, I started smoking a little faster, or if the natural shape change had something to do with it. I slowed down a bit and the burn did correct after another quarter to half inch. In this second third, I did get the sense of a heavier, fuller body. It wasn’t overwhelming but definitely noticeable. I usually have to smoke outside at home but I wanted to see what type of room aroma was coming off the cigar so I went to the garage and let the area fill with the smoke’s aroma. It was pretty heady. Being an ex-pipe smoker, it was about as close to that aromatic smell without being pipe tobacco. Again, it was not overpowering but really nice.

The last third of the cigar just seemed to take all the sweetness that was there in the first two thirds and enhance and blend of the other expected maduro type flavors throwing first one then another then yet another sweet spice into the mix. You definitely know too that you’re smoking a full-bodied cigar at this point. Still, there was no harshness, no ammonia or bitter taste – just creamy delicious powerhouse smoke.

Though I usually drink scotch, cognac, bourbon, or coffee with my cigars, I drank only water since I didn’t want to throw any of the possible flavor detractors into the opinion of this cigar. The finish surprising wasn’t too long or requiring mints, toothpaste, or something else. However, it was just long enough to make me want to get some more of the smoke into my mouth so that I could continue to enjoy the complexity of flavors that the cigar produced.

So, my overall impression of this cigar is pretty darn positive. I’d give it a strong 9 on Colin’s rating sheet. I think I’ll give the cigars about a week’s time in my humidor and then try one with some Scotch.

Pros: Very well rounded traditional maduro. Excellent stick with a nice kick.
Cons: too small...lol Although the band is very pretty, its takes ofer the cigar and must come off almost instantly

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Definately a leathery smell, most like a rich maduro smell.
Scent at Foot: Smells of farm, carmel, and a hint of sweetness.
Appearance: Very pretty cigar, band is appropriate and enhances the richness of this cigar.
Wrapper: Looks to be vertually perfect for a maduro. Typical maduro characteristics, thicker wrapper with texture and some veins. not over powering, just enough to let you know its a maduro.
Feel: Very firm to the touch. Not a whole lot of give.
Tongue: Sweet to the touch o the tounge and textured as a sponge would be
[/b]Flavor on Draw: [/b] Some barnyard, hay, a little sweetness, and maybe a hint of carmel.

Smoke
Taste: Its been consistant with the carmel/barnyard/hat flavors. There is a definate spiciness to the lips, and this thing is half way done and its starting to make its presence known.
Flavor Changes: One third of the way through it pickep up alot of spice. my lips are burning and the flavors have intensified. Its coating my tounge and continueing to have a great burn and draw is perfect.
Strength: This is giving me a run for my money. Two to three times the butt kicking of a regular stog.
Feeling: As far as the smoke...Very nice smoke...Incredible to the taste and touch. It is a definate contender in the boxing match I seem to be haveing.
Scent of Smoke: Sweet barnyard spice...consistant with the flavors.
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Burning my lips, wiht spice not heat. The burn is nice a mellow. No relights.
Draw: Perfect
Finish: Very commanding finish. Coating my mouth and letting me know that although I burned the hell out of this fellow, he went down with a fight to the last spark.
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Ash is not flaking and holding for about two inches. I tend to flick it often but I let it go for a bit.

Pros: great chocolate and spice flavors, beautiful band
Cons: some burn issues, a bit overpowering

Once upon a time a boy named Rob was playing around in his humidor one sunny morning after a big breakfast. Bored with his usual cast of friends he wished there was something more exciting to do. That is when he saw the white rabbit…

"Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" exclaimed the rabbit as it scurried towards its hole….

Longing for excitement, Rob decided to take his iced tea and follow the rabbit down the hole.
He followed the rabbit into a garden where a bunch of magical sticks were playing croquet. One of these sticks named Camacho approached Rob.

Camacho was a very rare fellow…a pure bred of the Maduro race. He was about 6” tall and a little fat around the middle, with a pointy head. His skin was very dark and bumpy and some of his veins could be seen. He smelled like dark chocolate and earth. Maybe he dropped a candy bar in dirt, Rob thought. And he was very well dressed with beautiful clothes on his head and feet. When Rob shook his hand there was very little give..it felt like Camacho was a bit dehydrated and needed something to drink.

Camacho suddenly yelled: “What are you doing here, the Queen of Hearts does not like visitors and will punish me!”. But it was too late, there stood the Queen of Hearts.

“Off with their heads!” She yelled. Feeling obliged to follow her command Rob cut off Camacho’s head.

Not satisfied, the vicious Queen also decreed: “Set fire to his foot as well!” So Rob did. But it was difficult. Camacho’s foot did not want to burn evenly so Rob had to relight it several times.

Very soon after lighting Camacho on fire, Rob felt light headed and began to have sensory hallucinations. He tasted rich dark chocolate that was a little bitter with some pepper and spice. Who would put pepper on chocolate thought Rob! But he enjoyed these flavors. The garden filled with the odor of chocolate and sweet incense that was really strong.

There was a lot of smoke coming from Camacho’s foot now and Rob began to suspect that the white rabbit might have slipped him a lot of the magic substance N because he felt a little woozy and light headed. He swears he saw a Chesire Cat but only it’s smiling mouth was visible..

Rob staggered out of the garden and suddenly came to a group of people having a tea party. The white rabbit was there and so was a man with a big grey flaky hat.

“I am the mad hatter, welcome to our tea party” the man exclaimed.

Rob could still see Camacho burning in the distance. After about a third of his body had burned Rob’s hallucinations became less strong and his experiences became more pleasant. He now tasted nice sweet cocoa and the tea he was drinking tasted a little leathery.

Rob continued to watch the fire burn until Camacho was just a small nub...it looked a lightly blurry because he could still feel the effects. It took over an hour and a half. Camacho seemed to burn very slowly. Rob enjoyed his experience in Wonderland but thinks it might have been better if he waited a few more months before following the white rabbit. He would give his experience an 8 out of 10. He was also glad that he had gone on many adventures like this before…a novice adventurer might get sick from all the excitement and not enjoy wonderland at all!

The End.

Pros: Flavor, flavor, flavor. Creamy smoke. Spectacular finish.
Cons: Cost, though I got a pretty good deal on them. Burn

Cigar: Camacho Triple Maduro 11/18

Price: Box of 18 was $120 so $6.66 a cigar. Most places they are about 12 bucks each.

Setting: Sun room, about 60 degrees out. Paired with a Barqs rootbeer.

Pre-light: It's a damned good looking cigar. Interesting figurado shape roughly a 6x54. To tell you the truth I mostly got the cigar for the gimmick and I thought they'd be good bomb fodder. Band is almost Gurkhaest in its ostentatiousness, but still pretty good looking with the silver contrasting nicely with the deep dark maduro wrapper. Had a nice sweet tobacco odor to it. The cigar is incredibly firm to the touch, I was a bit worried it would be too tight but after it's cut it had a great draw with just a touch of resistance. I was starting to get really excited for this smoke.

First third: I lit the cigar with my Zplus Zippo until it was fully lit at the foot and then took a draw. Wow. Simply wow. Started off with just incredible chocolatey maduro flavor. I was surprised with how smooth it was. No harshness at all. Just rich smooth flavor. I'm used to my Camachos being on the spicy side but this wasn't at all. As you can tell I was very pleased with the direction this was heading.

Second third: Flavors are really picking up. Still that chocolatey goodness but increasing in intensity. It almost overpowers the palate and the finish is very thick and lingering. Burn isn't incredibly even but never required a touch up. Ash is a tad dark and flakey but I'm not caring very much at this point. I'm in freaking heaven.

The finale: Man, I think I've found my new favorite smoke. The flavors continue being extremely rich and the smoke is incredibly thick. It is a smoke ring machine. No gratuitous smoke ring shots this time though. In total the smoke lasted me about 2 and a half hours with only one relight when I got distracted by a phone call. I smoked it until I literally couldn't hold it anymore and it never got harsh, just creamy smoothness the entire way through. Finish was thick and lingering but extremely pleasant.

Verdict: Definitely my new favorite smoke. I was really pleasantly surprised because I figured this was just a gimmick. Burn and draw were great, and I can't imagine it being more packed with flavor. It's really not an everyday cigar, and I did miss some of the spice from my regular smokes, but this one is gonna be my go to special occasion smoke. And of course I'm going to be finding a lot of special occasions. As for the bomb fodder, they're mine, all mine, I'm not letting these things out of my hands.
