Description: #116 Los Blancos Primos Habano Criollo Maduro

Wrapper grown in Nicaragua
Binder grown in Nicaragua
Filler grown in Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru

Habano Criollo Maduro wrapper, which is grown in Nicaragua, is known to be one of the best in the world. A master blender with extraordinary skill is required to create a cigar using this wrapper. The wrapper which is also aged 3 years can be overbearing if not countered by the proper binder and filler combination when blending this cigar.

Pros: Looked like a million bucks
Cons: Tasted like a dollar bill that was laying in the gutter

Pre-smoke

Scent of Wrapper: I'd say slightly fungal. Kinda like those giant mushrooms. Portabella

Scent at Foot: burnt coffee (also noticed 2 large stems!, this isn't starting off well)

Appearance: Nothing other than good things to say here. No rips, cracks, tears, or large veins.

Wrapper: fairly dark brown, but not quite oscuro. Very oily!

Feel: Springy, one or two hard spots, can feel some veins underneath the wrapper

Tongue: I searched for the word to describe my taste on the flavor chart. Pruney seemed to suit it. First time for anything I guess

Flavor on Draw: A bit of a spicy / peppery sensation on my tongue.

Smoke
Taste: Initial puffs were just "smoky". Soon developed a rather distinct burnt coffee flavor, but it wasn't pleasant to me. Maybe a bit of leather. About 1.5inches in, acrid taste started taking over. Ammonia crept in and ruined the cigar. I purged and purged until I was light headed. No dice. Still tasted like Windex.

Flavor Changes: decent at first, went downhill at about an inch or so in.

Strength: strong ammonia flavor...that's about it

Feeling: i wanted to scrape my tongue with my razor

Scent of Smoke: wasn't hateful, but again i was outside, and it wasn't concentrated so i couldn't tell

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: didn't get that far for it to get hot

Draw:draw was a bit tough for me, but not as bad as some others i've had. didn't need draw poked.

Finish: all i tasted was horrible, acrid ammonia for a while afterwards

Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience:
a. produced nice dense smoke, from which i could make nice smoke rings, which i love to do
b. the cigar kept going out after about the 2 inch mark. that is a pain in teh ass
c. kept having to purge to prevent the ammonia build up
d. this cigar might have made a much different impression on me if it was rested for another year or so at least.

Pros: Draw, Construction, Flavor, Wrapper appearance
Cons: I only had one

The appearance of this one really got my attention. It had a nice oily sheen to it, I mean man, was it slick!. It featured a few prominent veins, but this cigar was something else to view, now this is what a maduro should look like! The scent of the wrapper was of a fungal variety, couldn't be more specific, but the scent was very noticeable. At the foot, I detected a sweet liquorice and upon the draw, I'd have to say it was more of a spicy note. In regards to feeling, this was a hard cigar, didn't have a lot of "give" to it by any means, while the draw was fairly firm and just right. I had a good, clean cut and the wrapper appeared to be very durable.

In lighting this one up, the cedar and spice stood out. It then mellowed into an extremely pleasant milk chocolate flavor that was buttery smooth. This flavor lasted the entire duration of the smoking experience and other than an occasional reminder of spice, there was no other flavor that I could detect.

I didn't have any wrapper or burn issues to speak with this one, though it did rest nicely "naked" in my humidor for a few days. The scent of the smoke was a pleasant smoky-charcoal.

I had a wonderful experience with this cigar, it reminded me a lot of the Torano '59 in regards to the flavor. This is a nice cigar to look at, and an even better one to taste.

Pros: Nice wrapper and good construction
Cons: the draw was too tight

This cigar looks very nice. The stick was firm, the wrapper was oily and dark. I smelled slightly of licorice. The scent at the foot was grassy. The taste at the cut head had notes of chocolate. The draw had chocolate and licorice notes on top of strong grass. The draw was not noticeably tight.

This cigar started out so nice. However the draw was too tight for my style. I had to really work this one to smoke it and I do not like to work when I am relaxing. The flavor mellowed considerably as I smoked the cigar almost to the point it was bland. The tight draw was also a distraction. I had no burn issues... the cigar burned clean and even. The heat of the cigar was rather high. I could feel the burn about two inches below the burning edge. It was not uncomfortable, but it was noticeable.

The two things that did not appeal to me were the mild taste once you burned past the first quarter inch and the tight draw.

If you are looking for a beautiful looking maduro that is on the mild side, and you have a draw poker, then this is a good cigar for you.

Pre-smoke:

wrapper: little like licorice and a mushroom or fungus smell
foot: grass, licorice
wrapper: oily, dark, small veins. great looking
Feel: little tight, hard
Tongue: spice
Draw: spice

Smoke:

taste: sweet, licorice
strength: med to full
feeling: uncomfortable, but tolerable
scent of smoke: couldn't determine
heat in mouth: little at middle to end

Pros: Wonderful maduro wrapper.
Cons: I only got one.

A beautiful looking maduro cigar. The wrapper is a wonderful shade and felt like silk stockings. It is built like a tank; firm, solid, ready for action. The pre-light smell was good with a slight hint of maple syrup aroma. Pre-light draw was great with a slight, maduro spicy hint.

This baby lit up and burned great. A light gray ash that was solid and a great smoke odor. It started off a a medium strength cigar that got slightly stronger towards the end, with a draw that most cigars can only dream of. It sat in my hand like it belonged there, and never got hot. This cigar got me very calm and relaxed.

The only thing wrong I could find with this is that I only got one. I'm a certified maduro junkie and this cigar was heaven. The armoa and taste were what I come to expect in fine maduros. And the way the wrapper fellt like silk stockings on that someone special in your life, if you know what I mean....

Pros: Looks very good and was well constructed
Cons: Felt very hard, too firm of a draw and too peppery for my tastes

I liked the first two thirds of this one but it fell off on the last third.
  • Scent of Wrapper: Very leathery which I like, it reminded me of a library.
  • Scent at Foot: Same as wrapper just lighter.
  • Wrapper: Dark, very oily sheen. It had a couple of long veins but it looked and well made.
  • Feel: Pretty hard but well constructed.
  • Tongue: Slight tingle.
  • Flavor of Draw: A good fresh, tobacco taste.
  • Taste:
    1. An oak taste along with a good peppery flavor.
    2. The next third was less on the oak and more on the pepper.
    3. The last third was strong pepper and started to give a nasal burning when I exhaled through my nose.
  • Strength: I felt that this was a middle strong cigar but at the end it turned a little bitter due to the pepper increase.
  • Feeling: Again I will mention the library feeling, especially with the first 2/3 of the smoke.
  • Scent of Smoke: A good enjoyable room aroma.
  • Heat of Fingers and in Mouth: Nothing harsh.
  • Draw: More firm that I care for but not "un"enjoyable to me.
  • Finish: This cigar finished well; however, it gave the strong peppery taste on my tongue which was more than I normally care for.
  • Other aspects: The cigar had a nice gray ash which held on well. It did start to burn a little uneven at about the half way point. But one relight seemed to straighten it out for the remainder of the smoke.

When I started this cigar I thought that it may have been by Rocky Patel as it looked a lot like "The Edge" which I enjoy as regularly as I am able. But two things made me decide against it. I don't believe they make one of this length and two, the flavor was similar but the Edge doesn't keep building the peppery taste that really started to "pop" in the last portion of the cigar.

In my opinion it is a beautiful cigar in color and construction and the oily surface made it that much more desirable to me. I would have rated it one or two points higher if it hadn't been for all of the pepper flavor. I like some pepper but it just seemed to be too much...at least for me.

I may smoke it again but probably not in my regular lineup.

Pros: Good construction & burn; outstanding flavor
Cons: Early (and minor) burn issues

Pre-smoke

Scent of Wrapper: Worn leather, like a well-used baseball glove

Scent at Foot: Also leather, maybe a little more sweet

Appearance/Wrapper: Pronounced veins; an unbelievable sheen on the wrapper…very oily; superbly rolled (excellent construction); the wrapper was quite dark and beautiful

Feel: consistently firm, but pliable

Tongue: no spice or tingle

Flavor on Draw: Still the leather (like the scent), but with a slight pungency…call me crazy, but it reminded me of truffles

Smoke
Taste/Flavor changes: Initially the cigar took a predominantly leather taste, with slight cedar undertones. Come to think of it, the cedar taste was extremely mild, maybe more like cypress than cedar? The cedar notes faded into the background, and were replaced by a flavor akin to toast at about the 2” mark. Very nice.

Strength: Medium, or just slightly full

Feeling: This was a very relaxing cigar. There was enough of a nic kick to relax, but not enough that I had to worry about getting the “velvet hammer” effect.

Scent of Smoke: Very malty or leathery; smoky (of course)

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: No more so than average. Not a factor

Draw: Just slightly tighter than perfect. Very good.

Finish: Medium in duration; toasty in flavor

Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Slight uneven burning early on; self correcting after a couple of touchups in the first 1.5”. Easy light. The wrapper was a thing of beauty, appealing to the eye as well as the palate. I can’t wait for the reveal on this stick. I would like to put a few (dozen) away for later.

Final Rating: 8.0+

Pros: Nice color, wrapper and feel
Cons: Hot from Middle to end

Pre-smoke

Scent of Wrapper: Slight---Green peppercorn
Scent at Foot: Peppery
Wrapper: Some very small veins, not bad, nice color
Feeling: Alittle tight but did not interfer with the draw.
Tongue: Peppery, Earthy and Slight Tingly
Flavor on Draw: Peppery, Earthy

Smoke

Taste: Peppery-Started out pretty smooth and started building as I smoked to a full bodied cigar.
Flavor Changes: Peppery as I got towards the 1/2 way mark it started getting spicy, alittle harsh maybe--just alittle.
Strength: Med. / Full
Scent of Smoke: Really did not notice.
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Near the 2/3 is when the heat started-mouth and nose.
Draw: Very nice smooth / loose draw
Finish: Full at the end
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Not to bad a cigar overall. To me nothing special and would probably recommend to someone that likes the full bodied cigars.

Pros: Good draw, nice burn, pleasent flavor
Cons: Long finish which is good, bitter though which is not.

Pre Smoke

Scent of wrapper: A bit like wet leather
Scent of foot: Leather still with a bit of pepper
Wrapper: Nice dark maduro color, oily, some viens but small. Really nice looking cigar.
Feeling: Nicely constructed, firm but not to firm.
Tongue: Spicey, Peppery mades my lips and tongue tingle a bit
Flavor on draw: Still spicey

Smoke:

Taste: Pepper and spice which I enjoyed followed by sort of a bitter coffee, or even burnt coffee aftertaste, I didn't like that so much
Flavor changes: Became a little harsh and the bitter coffee got more pronounced as the cigar went on. About halfway through I encountered about an inch where I picked up the flavor of toasted nuts, possibly almonds, I really enjoyed this bit.
Strengh: Med/Full more on the full side
Scent of smoke: NA outside
Heat on fingers and mouth: Got hot at the last third, it was pretty humid out though.
Draw: Perfect
Finish: Long finish of bitter coffee that I did not like so much.

Other Aspects: Produced lot's of smoke, very thick. It went out a couple of times on me but the relight wasn't bad.

Pros: Appearance, construction, flavor, burn, draw
Cons: That I need to wait to get more

PRE-SMOKE

Scent of Wrapper: Leathery, cedar scent
Scent at Foot: Same as the wrapper
Appearance of Wrapper: Beautiful – dark and slick, a few small veins but nothing unreasonable, extremely attractive, oily
Feel: Solid throughout, very firm
Tongue: Nothing unusual here, the usual slight tingle
Flavor on Draw: Sweet leathery cedar with just a hint of spice on it

SMOKE

Taste: Delicious – still had the leather characteristics with a sweet undertone, developing into some spicy highlights, smooth and woody throughout
Strength: A strong medium to full bodied
Feeling: Happy as can be
Scent of Smoke:
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Just towards the end… but well worth the slight discomfort as I nursed this one til the end
Draw: A hair tighter than perfect
Finish: Sweet and lingering, just like a good maduro should be

FINAL RATING: Eight – this cigar had it all. Looks, flavor, burn, draw, construction… what isn’t to like? Where and when can I get more of these?

Cons: KINDA OF HARD AND DRAW WAS TOUGH

Pre-Smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Roasted Nuts & Coffee
Scent at foot: butterscotch
Appearance: very uniform

Feel: Little Hard
Tounge: Peppery, Bit a little
Flavor on Draw: Peppery
