Description: Troya cigars, whose legendary motto heralds it as "The benchmark for fine cigars," can now stand behind it with a renewed strength - and in more ways than one. Lignum-2, the exclusive distributor for Troya Clasico, has announced the Limited Edition release of an exciting new selection blended by Don Pepin Garcia, unquestionably one of the most revered master cigar blenders in the industry.

Troya Clasico captures the soul, spirit and character of fine Cuban cigars in a luxurious Nicaraguan puro.

With help from the gifted hands of Maestro Tobaquero, Jose Pepin Garcia, Troya has chosen the most select tobaccos grown in the fertile Jalapa region of Nicaragua, including an oily, coffee-hued, Corojo Oscuro wrapper.

This extraordinary leaf surrounds a blend of dark, rich-tasting Corojo and Criollo fillers and binders adorned with a traditional, Cuban-style triple cap. The experience is a smoke medium to full body in flavor, enticing the palate with earthly, sweet tobacco flavors and an intriguing spiciness. From the sweetness of the wrapper to the exquisite aroma, the cigar is robust and well-balanced in the Troya tradition, yet not overpowering.

Handmade at Tabacalera Cubana in Esteli, Nicaragua, Troya Clasico cigars are rolled by only the most experienced torcedores in three popluar shapes:

Troya Clasico XVIII (5"x 54 Robusto)
Troya Clasico LIV (6" x 52 Toro)
Troya Clasico LXIII (7" x 50 Churchill

Pros: Fantastic complexity and sweet and spicy flavors at start
Cons: Sudden change in flavor, uneven burn

Troya Clasico XVIII
5"x 54 Robusto

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on a hot Arizona morning paired with root beer and Govt Mule on my iPod.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Hint of spice (pepper) and light cedar from the wrapper. Very rich tobacco, cedar, and cherry from the foot.

Appearance: Very smooth caramel brown wrapper with a reddish tint. Nice even cap. Band slid right off which I always appreciate.

Feel: Slightly hard to the squeeze throughout the cigar but not too bad.

Pre-light draw: Lots of tingle on the tongue after the punch cut. Mostly earthy with a little hint of spice (from the wrapper) on draw.

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Started out incredibly complex and wonderful! Tons of pepper (especially when expelled through the nose, caramel, and black cherry flavors. Reminded me a lot of the Litto Gomez Diez Small Batch. But suddenly after about an 1” it was like someone flipped a switch and the spice almost disappeared. At this point it became very bready and creamy with some caramel still. About half way through the smoke the pepper picked up a little bit but was nowhere near as strong.

Strength: Full. I felt a little light head by the end of this smoke.

Feeling: Little hard to chew but not bad. Comfortable shape in hand and mouth.

Scent of smoke: Tons of whitish, brown smoke with a baking bread and chocolate scent. Very nice!

Heat: None at all .

Draw & Burn: Perfect draw but pretty uneven burn that required a few corrections.

Finish: Started out with an amazingly complex and flavorful finish: started with a blast of pepper, switched to cherry and then ended as leather. After the first 1” this changed to a shorter fruity and leathery finish.

OTHER:
Ash: Greyish white ash that held well even with corrections.

Duration: Nubbed in about 1.5 hrs.

CONCLUSION: This was a difficult cigar to evaluate because it started out as an incredibly flavorful/complex cigar and then changed suddenly. Because of this my expectations were very high so I think I am being a bit unfair in my score. After the first 1” it became a very good flavorful smoke with nice caramel and bread flavors and a hint of spice, but after the awesome start this let me down a bit. The uneven burn also took away a bit from the smoking experience. I would not call this one of Pepin’s best creations but would definitely recommend it and would like to try another one to see if I have the same reaction.

FINAL RATING: 7.5/10

Cheers!

Rob
