Description: Don Lino Africa cigars represent one of the most unique tasting cigars ever to enter the imported premium cigar market. Presented in humidor-style boxes with stunning African safari scenes, Don Lino Africa cigars are handmade with select tobaccos from The Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Mexico, plus a rare African filler leaf that gives this blend its distinctive flavor and aroma. A dark, oily, 1999-vintage, Nicaraguan Habano wrapper leaf adds extra depth for a full-flavored, complex smoke that lingers on the palate.

Pros: strong leather flavor, lots of smoke, pre-light pepper
Cons: mismatched flavors, burn problems

Don Lino Africa Duma
Robusto
5” x 50

Nicaraguan wrapper with Cameroon tobacco used as filler.

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on my patio on a breezy evening paired with a Miller Chill and sports radio.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Nice leather and cocoa from the wrapper. Light cedar and cocoa scents from the beautiful.

Appearance: This cigar has a beautiful multi-colored band. The wrapper is oily and somewhat splotchy. It has a chocolate brown hue with some inconsistencies in color. The cap was pretty rough looking.

Feel: A little soft in places.

Pre-light draw: Lots of pepper tingle on my lips and tongue after my punch cut. Tons of pepper and some other spices on the draw. This was most pepper I have ever experienced at pre-light which was very nice!

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: This cigar a very unique combination of flavors that I don’t think I have experienced in another cigar….perhaps this was due to the unique use of African Cameroon tobacco as a filler. The dominant flavor was very strong leather, which I like. There was also lots of pepper (particularly through the nose) and a hint of bitter chocolate on a few draws. Finally, I also detected a strong vegetal flavor that I could only describe as a mix of cabbage and hay. Although these flavors were interesting I do not really think they melded together very well. These flavors stayed the same for the entire smoke.

Strength: Medium to full.

Feeling: Good resistance to chewing and lots of pepper on the lips from the wrapper.

Scent of smoke: This cigar produced tons of brownish/white smoke with a mild bread and vegetal scent.

Heat: None at all.

Draw & Burn: Perfect resistance on the draw. Burn was quite uneven and required a few touch-ups.

Finish: An average length, dry finish with strong leather and a hint of pepper.

OTHER:
Ash: Flaky grey ash that held well despite it’s appearance. After my first ashing the cigar tunneled a little bit and required a re-light.

Duration: Smoked to final 1” in about 1 hr.

CONCLUSION: Put simply, the best part about this cigar is it’s band. While it did have some unique flavors (cabbage!) and a nice strong leather base they did not seem to blend well together. It wasn’t that they were unpleasant or harsh, they just did seem to compliment each other. There were also some burn issues with this cigar. I would not recommend this cigar.

FINAL RATING: 5/10

Cheers!

Rob
