Description: Viejo cigars present the ultimate from Puro Indios, makers of some of the finest and most flavorful premium cigars in the business. Spanish for 'aged,' each Puros Indios Viejo Presidente uses a medium-bodied blend of 1999-vintage filler tobaccos from Brazil, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua with a rich-tasting Ecuadorian binder and wrapper leaf. The cigars are aged four years after rolling, allowing the tobaccos to marry. The result is a mellow, yet complex and perfectly-balanced smoke.

Pros: complex, well-balanced mild cigar
Cons: effortful draw due to length

Puros Indios Viejo Natural
Presidente
Churchill 7.5” x 47

Natural (Colorado Claro) Wrapper
Made in Honduras

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on my patio on a sunny morning paired with iced tea and the Allman Brothers. I first tried these on a cruise my wife took to the Bahamas. I have to admit I was disappointed when I saw the humidor selection on the ship but I was pleasantly surprised after smoking one of these and smoked 2-3 more during the cruise. I was interested to see if I would have the same experience on dry land.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Very light cedar from the wrapper. A little cedar and basic tobacco from the foot.

Appearance: Light caramel brown wrapper that was a little splotchy in color with a few veins visible. The cigar also seemed to be slightly curved?

Feel: Hard to the squeeze…not much give.

Pre-light draw: No tingle, but a little wood on the tongue after my punch cut. Nice cedar and a hint of spice on the draw.

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Dominant flavors were light wood (pine or birch) and a mildish spice (green pepper). The pepper was little stronger through the nose. I also picked up some hints of light chocolate and vanilla. Overall, very well-balanced and complex. There were no major changes in flavor, rather the ones noted took turns coming to the forefront.

Strength: Mild-medium.

Feeling: Good resistance to the chew and some nice spice on the lips from the wrapper. The shape was a little uncomfortable to hold in the hand due to it’s length…it felt like it was also going to fall out of my hand.

Scent of smoke: This cigar produced an average amount of creamy white smoke with a mostly grassy aroma.

Heat: None at all..this cigar smokes very cool .

Draw & Burn: Took a little effort because of the length of the cigar but was tolerable..improved a little bit when I did a blade cut. Burn was a little uneven but corrected itself.

Finish: Short to medium length finish with some nice wood and pepper flavors.

OTHER:
Ash: A nice white colored ash that held very well.

Duration: Nubbed in just under 2 hrs.

CONCLUSION: This cigar lived up to my initial “cruise impressions”. To me it is a very well-balanced and complex mild cigar with some nice wood, spice and sweet flavors. The extra ageing is definitely noticeable as it is a very smooth smoke. The Viejo is definitely my favorite Puros Indios product and one of my favorite mild cigars. The construction was good but the draw was a bit effortful suggesting that a shorter vitola may be better. I would recommend this cigar and think it is a good value at it’s $6-7 price tag.

FINAL RATING: 8.1/10

Cheers!

Rob
