ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on an overcast Arizona morning paired with root beer and Harry Potter 7.
PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Very mild aroma with leather and basic tobacco from wrapper. Some earth from the foot.
Appearance: Veiny chocolate brown wrapper with solid construction. Simple small band/cap over foot. Nice double cap. A few stems visible in foot.
Feel: Tightly packed but not dry. Could feel and see a couple stems in the filler pressing against the wrapper.
Pre-light draw: A little pepper tingle on the tongue after my punch cut. Mostly earth and basic tobacco on draw.
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Dominant flavors were nice rich black coffee and sweet caramel that were present for the entire smoke. Initially there was a little pepper on the draw that became quite strong (but not harsh) when the smoke was expelled through the nose. After about an 1” or so the pepper faded out and the cigar became much more creamy with and smooth. Near the half way point I also detected some leather. A very interesting and well-balanced mix of flavors overall.
Strength: Medium. This was by far the mildest Camacho I have smoked, that being said it was definitely not mild compared to other cigars!
Feeling: A little hard to chew and uncomfortable to keep in the mouth for long periods due to the large ring gauge. Lots of pepper and a nice nutty flavor from the wrapper when chewing.
Scent of smoke: Lots of bluish/white smoke with a dominant bready flavor that occasionally had some exotic spice aromas that I could not identify. Lots of smoke even when not drawing.
Heat: None.
Draw & Burn: Draw was too tight for my usual punch cut due to large ring gauge, but was fine after a blade cut. Burn was a little uneven at first and required a couple corrections but was OK overall.
Finish: Very nice complex and long. Initially a lot of pepper on the roof of the mouth, lips and tongue. Became more sugary sweet and nutty as the cigar burned down further. I was sad that I had to brush my teeth afterwards because I could have enjoyed this aftertaste for long after I was finished smoking.
OTHER:
Ash: Flaky, alt and pepper ash that held well.
Duration: Smoked about 2/3 of this monster in about 1 hr and 45 due to time constraints. It would have easily taken 2.5 hrs to nub!!!
CONCLUSION: A terrific maduro with well-balanced black coffee, caramel, and pepper flavors and a fantastic sweet and nutty finish.. I found this cigar to be very atypical for a Camacho in that it is was much smoother, creamier and not as powerful. But typical of Camacho cigars it had great construction and burned well overall. I will definitely be buying more of this (although probably the smaller vitolas) and would highly recommend this cigar – especially to those that have found other Camachos too overpowering.
