Punch Rare Corojo Magnum
5.1” x 54
Box press
$4.5
-dark and oily Ecuadorian Sumatra
-blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican long-leaf tobaccos inside

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on a sunny Arizona afternoon on my patio paired with root beer and Harry Potter 7. I have had several Rare Corojo’s before but this is my first review.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Cocoa, earth and a hint of spice (like paprika) from the wrapper. Cocoa and earth from the foot.
Appearance: Veiny, rustic, coffee bean colored wrapper. Moderately sharp box press. Crooked double cap. Double bands that were very loose and slid around on the cigar.

Feel: Tightly packed throughout but not dry
Pre-light draw: No tingle on the tongue after my punch cut. Leathery with a hint of spice on the draw.
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Dominant flavors in this cigar were chocolate, savory spice (similar to clove), and somewhat tart leather. The spice increased significantly when the smoke was expelled through the nose. There were no major changes during the smoke except that the sweetness calmed down after the first 1/3 and leather became the primary flavor.

Strength: For me it was in the Mild to Medium range.
Feeling: A little hard to chew, was worried about cracking the wrapper. Box press was comfortable in both the mouth and hand .
Scent of smoke: This cigar produced a large volume of brownish-grey smoke that had a fairly mild aroma. The dominant scents I picked up were toast and grass.
Heat: No at all on the fingers or mouth.
Draw & Burn: Perfect draw. Slightly uneven burn that required a couple corrections.
Finish: A fairly short finish that was slightly gritty in texture with a sugary and bready flavor.

OTHER:
Ash: Greyish-white ash that held very well.

Duration: I smoked this in to the final 1/3 in just over 1hr and put it down due to time constraints.
CONCLUSION: An enjoyable cigar with decent construction that is completely misnamed in my opinion since it is neither “rare” nor a “corojo”. The leathery, chocolate and spice flavors were nice but were not something you can’t find in a lot of maduros and I can’t see how rare the actually leaf can be since my B&M always has a large stock of these. And as stated above the wrapper is actually an Ecuadorian Sumatra and does not contain any of the corojo leaf…and not surprisingly it did not have any of the peppery, fruity corojo flavors I have come to expect. Don’t get me wrong I like this cigar and would recommend it but with the caveat that you should build up any expectations because of the name.
FINAL RATING: 7.2/10
Cheers!
