Blind Tasting Panel Cigar #124
5.5” x 43
Corona Gorda

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on a warm morning on my patio paired with water and Drive by Truckers on my iPod.
PRE-SMOKE:
Scent. I could not pick up much aroma at all from this cigar…maybe some light wood from the wrapper and basic tobacco from the foot.
Appearance: This cigar has a rustic, veiny, light-brown (bosc pear) hued wrapper. The cap was a slightly sloppy looking small pigtail.

Feel: Good give to squeezing throughout the cigar.
Pre-light draw: I did not pick up anything on my tongue after my punch cut and only light wood an mild tobacco on the draw.
SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: I had a difficult time picking up any flavors at all from this cigar. The only thing I really detected was a buttery/oily sensation in my mouth with each draw..but this was more of a texture than a taste. I though I picked up some light wood/paper but it was not consistent.

Strength: Extremely mild.
Feeling: Good resistance to chewing. Very interesting fabric/cloth wrapper texture in mouth.
Scent of smoke: This cigar produced a ton of light grey smoke for which I could not pick up any odors at all.
Heat: None.
Draw & Burn: Perfect resistance on the draw. The burn was a little uneven and required one correction.

Finish: A medium length oily finish.
OTHER:
Ash: This cigar had a very flaky and crumbly white ash that was dropping on my lap.

Duration: I only smoked about ˝ of this cigar (in about 35 min) b/c I wasn’t enjoying it at all.
CONCLUSION: For me this cigar was almost completely tasteless. I did have a good draw and produced lots of smoke but other than that it was seriously flawed. I would not recommend it.
FINAL RATING: 3/10
Cheers!

The pigtail cap
|
|
Cons:
|
Numerous, please read the review for further detail
|
|
Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Maple syrup & pepper
Scent at Foot: Sweet, prune
Appearance
Wrapper: Medium brown, oily with a pigtail cap. There was a 1/16” diameter hole in the wrapper about 1/3 down from the foot under the ID # band. This hole seemed as if it were cored through to the middle of the filler tobacco. Is this a beetle hole? I don’t know but I am concerned. I inspected the rest of my cigar collection and did not see any evidence of an infestation. ???
Feel: Firm w/ some sponginess
Tongue: Nothing discernable maybe it is because of the lack of a large opening. I just pinched off the pigtail with my fingers.
Flavor on Draw: Lemon grass and a touch of salt
Smoke
Taste: At the start a very heavy taste on the mouth, it coated my tongue with a steak & salt taste and a back throat bite. After a third in the flavor changed to a more acrid flavor, like chewing aspirin.
Flavor Changes
Strength: Mild yet harsh if that is possible?
Feeling: Disappointing and worry (beetle hole?)
Scent of Smoke: Semi-sweet like burning leaves from the yard
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: None
Draw: A nice draw with a slight resistance
Finish: A long lingering taste that definitely is not pleasurable
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: This cigar did not give volumes of smoke. The smoke kept funneling through the small hole in the wrapper until I burned passed it. It had a severely flaky ash. It was constantly falling off onto my lap and shirt. It seemed as if it were a massed produced, short filler, machine made cigar with its’ crumbly ash and unpleasant tobacco taste. I could not finish this one. I put this one down after about half way through the ordeal.
Final Rating: I rate this a 1 – Unpleasant Flavor

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: slight scent of clove???
Scent at Foot: Sweet, prune
Appearance
Wrapper: Medium brown, pigtail cap. I saw a hole about 2 inches from the foot.
Feel: Firm, sponginess at tip
Tongue: nothing noticed guillotine cut
Flavor on Draw: sweet clove on draw not over powering
Smoke
Taste: sweet at the beginning almost like a mint taste
Flavor Changes
Strength: very mild to med
Feeling: not something to tell my friends about
Scent of Smoke: burning clove
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: None
Draw: Hard draw
Finish: almost like a spearmint taste on the finsh
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: did not really like this cigar and felt it was a big let down in some points I thought the cigar get a little bit better. The ash was flaky held to almost half of the cigar.
Gave this cigar a 3

Pros:
|
Mild sweet and toasty. Even burn.
|
|
Cons:
|
Flavor is underwhelming. Not enough smoke, draw is a little tight.
|
|
PRE-SMOKE
Scent of Wrapper: Not aromatic.
Scent at Foot: Not aromatic.
Appearance: Corona shape
Wrapper: Smooth. Small veins. Very slight sheen. Color varies a little bit. Seems to be darker near the foot. The cap is smartly finished in a little pig tail. Defect about an inch from the foot - a matchhead size hole in the wrapper.
Feel: Fairly firm for the head end, slightly looser at the foot half. No soft spots noted.
Tongue: No tingle. Quite a bit of sweetness. Cane Sugar taste.
Pre-light Flavor on Draw: Moderate black licorice flavor. Some mild sweet tones.
SMOKE
Lit alright. Draw is acceptable, but perhaps is starting off a bit on the tight side. First impression is the cigar is not producing enough smoke. I am getting some toasty flavors, like dry cocoa and nuts and some mild sweetness. This cigar is easy to roll through the nose right from the start. I like some of the flavors this cigar is producing, but they are a little weak on strength of flavor for my taste. The flavor reminds me quite a bit of some of the Fuente cigars I have had - very mild and toasty.
Massaging the head helped open it up a bit more. I am really having to draw a lot on the cigar to get smoke. It is not producing an adequate amount of smoke.
The flavor is pleasantly sweet and has some interesting toasty notes in it. A few times I thought I sensed some oak wood flavors.
Strength: The flavor is mild.
The feeling (or nicotine strength) is mild. No nicotine effects.
Scent of the Smoke: Alright for the most part. Every once in a while I would catch a scent from the resting cigar that struck me as unpleasant.
Heat on fingers and mouth: Nothing observed.
Draw: Draw was slightly flawed. It opened up somewhat as the cigar warmed up. Generally, it was too tight. I am having to really work it to get enough smoke in my mouth.
Finish: Short but pleasant.
Other: Burn line has been straight. No problem staying lit. The "mascara line" is thin but well defined and consistent.
Ash is leaning a little toward the flakey end of the scale. It holds on for an inch or so.
Overall, I would rate this cigar 5.4 which is Acceptable to Good. I would rate it higher if it produced more smoke. I feel this cigar had potential to score higher, but unfortunately the flavor was too mild for my taste. The cigar did develop a little more spice as it got past the halfway mark, but I think I would like it with a little more pepper or some more pronounced flavors. I liked the sweet and toasty notes - it just needed something to counterbalance that.

Pros:

The size ? pretty good burn
|
|
Cons:
|
flavor, strength

|
Pre-smoke-
Scent of Wrapper: Not picking much up
Scent at Foot: Slightly sweet, again not much.
Appearance: Pretty rough wrapper. There are several spots where it looks like it will unravel.
Wrapper: Brown wrapper with tail on the cap.
Feel: This cigar feels very firm. I did not find any soft spots.
Tongue: Very very slight sweet taste. I am not sure if that is the cigar or the Gatorade I drank.
Flavor on Draw: Again, slight sweet taste with a little tobacco flavor.
Smoke-
Taste: Slight sweet taste but not too much flavor
Strength: Mild. Way too mild for my taste.
Scent of Smoke: Not picking anything out. It's odd, the smoke barely smells.
Draw: The draw is ok. A little stiff for my taste.
Finish: Short flavorless finish.
I did not like this cigar at all. There was very little flavor. The draw was a little tight. The strength made me think I was wasting my time. The only good things I can say about the cigar is that I liked the tail on the cap, I didnt have any burn issues and I liked the size.

Good construction and burn
|
|
Cons:
|
Zero flavor, no flavor, nothing

|
Smoked on a nice fall night on my front porch.
Pre-Smoke
Scent of Wrapper: I really could not pick up any scents off this one.
Sent at Foot: Maybe some spice and earthyness.
Wrapper: Nice solid color with a nice small pigtail. I had some cracks in the wrapper but that was due to shipping or my fault, not sure.
Feel: This was a very firm cigar.
Tongue:: Nothing.
Flavor on Draw: A very slight peppermint or almost nothing at all.
Smoke
Taste: Well this was the strangest thing, I could not taste a thing with this cigar, nothing. It seemed that maybe there was something about the explode with great taste, but there was no taste at all. I seemed like I was puffing air through the cigar. At one point I thought that I was about to get some nice cedar flavors or something, but I think it was my mind playing tricks on me. All in all not unpleasant, there was just no taste at all.
Strength: Milder than mild.
Sent of smoke: This cigar had a very nice cedar smell, and my porch had the smell of my local B&M, that was nice.
Heat on Fingers and in mouth: none noted.
Draw: Nice draw, not to tight, and not to open.
Finish: Really nothing, I got sort of a film feeling in my mouth but nothing else.
Other: I have to say that this was the first cigar that I smoked that had zero flavor. That makes it sort of hard to rate because it was not Unpleasant or bad, it was just sort of nothing. The construction was good, but if I was blind and could not see the smoke I guess I would have thought I forgot to light up or something.
Overall I would give this a 2.5/10. I guess It was Seriously Flawed in my mind because there could be no way that someone could produce a cigar that had no flavor on purpose, and why would one want to smoke one? But the construction was good, so I'll round up to a 3.

Pre-Smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Leather and nuts
Scent at Foot: Leather and a hint of cedar
Wrapper: Dull brown wrapper with a pigtail head. Rather rustic looking – reminiscent of an apprentice-made cigar.
Feel: Solid
Tongue: Nothing to speak of
Flavor on Draw: Earthy and slightly grassy
Smoke
Taste: The cigar started off with muted flavors of black tea and roasted nuts. Actually, picking up on flavors with this cigar was unusually difficult. The lack of flavors reminded me of many machine-made cigars.
Flavor Changes: None that I could detect
Strength: Very mild
Feeling: Boredom. This cigar just didn’t do anything for me at all.
Scent of Smoke: Mild
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Became bitter and hot with almost 2 inches left
Draw: Tight. It was a struggle to get any smoke with this cigar. I believe that storing at a lower RH could help this.
Finish: Short and rather mild
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Rather loose ash that kept me in fear of wearing it the whole time I was smoking.
Final Rating: A rather uninspired 3

|
Cons:

PRE-SMOKE
Scent of Wrapper: Slight aroma.
Scent at Foot: Not aromatic.
Appearance: Corona shape
Wrapper: Smooth. Small veins. The cap is pretty neat and finished in a little pig tail.
Feel: Just about right.
Tongue: Small tingle 1/2 way in.
Pre-light Flavor on Draw: Moderate wood flavor. Some mild sweet tones once in awhile, but not every puff. No cedar or nut, just wood.
SMOKE
Lit nicely. Draw is very good. The cigar is producing the perfect amount of smoke. Very weak on strength of flavor for my taste.
Strength: The flavor is very, very mild.
Scent of the Smoke: Not over powering, almost does not exist.
Heat on fingers and mouth: Nothing observed.
Draw: Draw was very good.
Finish: Short, not to my liking.
Other: Burn line has been straight. No problem staying lit. No re-lighting.
Ash is great! Tight and not flaky.
I would rate this higher if the flavor was more pronounced and less woody.
