Description: (from CigarCyclopedia.com)

Rolando Reyes hasn’t been sitting on his laurels, either. The maker of Cuba Aliados and Puros Indios is releasing a limited-production “Anniversary” blend marking the roughly 100-year history of the Aliados, as well as Reyes’s 83rd birthday.

The Cuba Aliados Anniversary features six-year-aged tobaccos with an Ecuadorian-grown binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan-grown filler, capped with a choice of either a Nicaraguan Corojo or an Ecuadorian-grown, Sumatra-seed wrapper. It’s medium-bodied with lots of flavor and will be offered in four sizes:

> Power: 6 1/2 inches by 56 ring;

> Diadema No. 3: 5-inch by 58-ring perfecto;

> Magico: 6 inches by 48 ring and

> Short: 4 inches by 48 ring.

Pros: Typical CA flavor
Cons: loose construction

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Earth and leather
Scent at Foot: Earth and grass
Wrapper: Leathery, slightly veiny
Feel: Some sponginess, flattened on two sides
Tongue: Slight hint of unsweetened cocoa powder
Flavor on Draw: Musty

Smoke
Taste: Grass and wood with some pepper
Flavor Changes: n/a
Strength: Mild
Scent of Smoke: Mild
Draw: Free
Finish: Medium, slightly peppery

The CA Anniversary Magico Maduro started out in the classic Cuba Aliados tradition with a mild, lightly grassy flavor. I was a bit surprised that the maduro wrapper on this cigar only contributed slightly to the overall flavor, adding a few hints of wood and pepper. The flavor of this cigar seemed to come primarily from the filler, which was typical CA. Cuba Aliados fans who normally don’t smoke maduro cigars should definitely put this on their list of must-try cigars.

As with many Cuba Aliados that I’ve had, the draw was on the free side, which made it rather easy to over smoke the cigar if you don’t pace yourself.

I found this cigar to be a slight disappointment due to my expectations of a maduro experience.

Final Rating: 5.5
