Description: Cusano 18 Maduro Robusto 5 X 50

This paired maduro uses Dominican Oro tobacco in the filler. The wrapper is composed of two tobaccos. The first is a Connecticut broadleaf and the second is a Brazilian Mata Fina. The latter of which is placed inside the filler.

Pre light
I used a Xikar on this cigar which yielded a generous draw.. The pre light draw was excellent with core earth and leather flavors. The cigar it self has good construction with an oily, brown wrapper

1 third
I decided to not pair this cigar with a beverage. I have not smoked it before, but I have had the double Connecticut which I found to be very mild and lacking in rich, tobacco flavors. I’m hoping the addition of maduro will add strength and character to this cigar. The cigar begins with a smooth combination of leather and spice. It offers just the right amount of smoke. The cigar settles into a consistent, medium body.

2 Third

The burn is slightly uneven but seems to correct itself. There is an addition of a light cocoa flavor that further adds to the smooth, creamy nature of this cigar.

Last third

The foot required a touchup with my lighter. The flavors start to give way to bitter coffee.

Over all impression,
This cigar certainly provided me with much more flavor than the double Connecticut counterpart. There is a small amount of spice that does not detract from the consistent smooth and creamy character. I wouldn’t consider buying a box of these cigars; however, it does provide a nice change of pace with its blend of several tobaccos.

Pros: Good flavor, good burn
Cons: None noted

Pre-Smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Leather with hints of hay, slight spicy hints.

Scent at Foot: Leather and slight cedar.

Wrapper: Slight veining but otherwise oily and smooth.

Feel: Well constructed, firm with no noticeable soft areas.

Tongue: Distinct leather and slight pepper.

Flavor on Draw: Leather comes through strong with pepper aftertaste.

Smoke
Taste : Initial taste of leather and slight creamy taste. Has some hints of chocolate. Burnt coffee pronounced at in last third. Good smoke.

Strength: Mild/moderate at start and finishing moderate.

Feeling: Early morning cigar paired with coffee, definite relaxation.

Scent of Smoke: Burnt hay with slight coffee hints.

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Good clean burn with no overheating.

Draw: Good draw with just a slight resistance, just the way I like it.

Finish: Creamy chocolate, burnt coffee last third.

Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: This cigar continues to be in my rotation of daily smokes. I keep a supply on hand at all times. Very pleasant way to start a Sunday.

Final Rating: 7.0
