tear in wrapper (more on this below)
|
|
Appearance: Square-pressed, dark, prominent veins. Nice pig-tail cap. A tear in the wrapper about where a band would be. Perhaps from removing the band?
Scent at foot: I never thought I would say this about a cigar, but... berries. That and a little vanilla.
Scent at cut head: earthy, and meat
Draw: very easy.
Taste of smoke: Mushrooms.
Construction: Very good. I was able to have a full 2" of ash in the beginning.
Burn was straight and clean.
This cigar started out tasting of red wine, tobacco, and a little charcoal. It started out mild in flavor, but medium-full in strength. The flavor grew to more of a medium profile and more complex as I smoked it. Some coffee moved into the profile. The finish was tea or celery.
I liked this cigar. It was a relaxing experience. I did not have to relight it. The draw was excellent and did not make me work. It never became harsh, ammonia-ish(I know that is not a word?), or too peppery. It was a real joy to smoke and was what I look for to unwind at the end of the day. I never thought I would ever use "berries" or "wine" to describe a cigar, but here I am. I would recommend this cigar to someone who wants something different from what is so prominent on the market right now.

Pros:
|
Enjoyable scent with lots of smoke on the draw
|
|
Cons:
|
Bitterness on the foot at the beginning.
|
|
Prelight:
Appearance: Dark Brown / slight veiny
Feel: Very firm & tight / nice box press
Tongue: Bitter at taste
Flavor: Tobacco with some sort of berry taste like Blackberry
Prep: Straight cut.
Smoke:
First third - Started of as Oak & hint of pepper / medium strength
Second third - This cigar builded a full medium taste with a nice ash consistancy, also kept the same flavors.
Final third - Cigar ended at medium strength, nice draw throughout the smoke with flavors keeping the same.
Overall, I would give this a rating of 8.0 and definitely would recommend it to a friend. The cigar was very much enjoyed and I plan to smoke the second one in the next 2 to 3 wks to let the flavor age.

Draw

This cigar is the lone box-pressed version of the bunch. It had some dark brown patches on it, with some light brown spots that resemble water stains. It had a unique twisty-tail at the head of the cigar. I had a good and clean cut, but was disappointed in the draw as it was next to impossible. I clipped two more times before getting an adequate draw. The scent of the wrapper was of a dirt/earth nature that was very pungent. Upon placing my tongue on the newly cut end, I noticed a definite zing to it. The pre-lit draw flavor was of a bready nature.
This cigar lit well and had a consistent burn throughout the entire smoking experience. Flavor wise, I noticed a damp cedar flavor at the beginning of the cigar. It mellowed out into a woodsy/bark flavor at the middle point. One of the more surprising aspects of it was a light berry note that was discernable. The aftertaste was a distinct cedar flavor that was very pleasant. I'd have to say that this cigar is a mild/medium bodied cigar. It would compliment a cup of coffee very well as it did mine. This one gave a cool burn, nothing to really notice on the fingers in that regard. It also didn't give off a ton of smoke, though the ash held firm and was very pleasant to look at.

Cigar: Blind #137
Environment: About 10:30am, upper 70's, and calm. Cigar has been stored at 65-67% rh for the past several of weeks.
Prelight:
Appearance: Well shaped box-pressed toro with a short pigtail. Medium-to-dark brown wrapper with a very fine veins running the length of the cigar.
Feel: Firm overall with no hard or soft spots.
Wrapper scent: Bread/yeast dough
Scent @ foot: Same as the wrapper, a touch stronger.
Prep: V-cut dead center
Tongue: no tingle
Flavor on draw: Same bread/yeast dough. Draw was just fine.
Smoke:
Light: Toasted the foot evenly. Medium gray smoke. Kinda of an oaky tase initially.
First third - Ash is very white and compact - dropped at about 1.25". Even burn line, with a thin, even mascara line. An adequate amount of smoke and draws well. Woody/oaky taste with a little of the breadiness I smelled/tasted pre-light. Medium bodied cigar with a medium bread finish. Great morning smoke with a cup of coffee.
Second third - picked up a faint taste of what I can only describe as melon (this is a new one for me). The smoke (room smell) is not over-powering at all. A little tingle on the middle sides of the tongue. Haven't picked up on any spice/pepper. Still a goodly volume of smoke and great burn.
Final third - Draw is still fine, but the smoke has become somewhat restricted. A little bite toward to front of the tongue, and the smoke is a bit hotter perhaps due to pulling on it harder to compensate for the reduced volume of smoke. Never did get hot to the touch, and finished without bitterness.
I like this cigar, and plan to pick up a few more once I find out what it is. Would recommend for a medium morning smoke - or to anyone who enjoys a medium cigar. The bread/yeast taste is different for me, and yet enjoyable.
Webmeister scale:
0 - Really did not like this one.
1 - Not bad, but not memorable
2 - Maybe, but I'd like to try another stick
X 3 - Pretty darn good - I think I'll buy a fiver
4 - This is a keeper - gimme a box for bombing!
5 - A great stick - buying a box to keep for myself!
On the "official" scale, I am going to be generous when I give this an 8 overall.
8 for construction
8 for draw, ash, and volume of smoke
8 for taste and complexity
