Nicaraguan Puro

Double Robusto 5 x 54
CA Rating: 94
Being a triple ligero, I expected this cigar to kick me in the slats. I was at odds to figure out what beverage to accompany this little beauty with. My last reviewed smoke left me wishing that I had opted for black coffee. So that’s where I started, with steaming cup of Walmart’s finest Columbian coffee. (Which, by the way, is better than any store brand I’ve had to date….)
The cap was exquisitely wrapped. The wrapper was smooth and oily virtually no veins visible. The band was very eye catching and flattered the wrapper nicely. It reminded me of a cigar shaped chocolate bar! If it tasted as good as it looked, this was going to be a happy evening!
I opted to cut the cap as I usually do. This cap was beautifully wrapped. I believe I could have cut it with a dull paring knife and had a good cut! So, needless to say, the Xicar had not problem with the task and cut it flawlessly.
The foot toasted very easily and the burn started off nice and even. The initial flavor was leathery. I anticipated getting through the first ½ inch to see what might happen next. It put out plenty of smoke with a pleasant aroma. The burn created a nice white firm ash. At about the ¾ inch mark it picked up a hint of white pepper. There was another flavor that I detected, but it took a moment to realize it was apple wood. It was amazingly clean, no aftertaste at all. I stared at this cigar in awe between puffs. I’ve never come across one quite like it. The flavor on each draw was consistent; I found few and very subtle changes as it burned. But after each exhale, the taste disappeared. Poof, Gone! As though I had just taken a sip of fresh spring water and washed it away.
Now I have to tell you, this time the black coffee wasn’t the correct option. This is a very heady cigar. So, about half way through, I broke out the Coffeemate coconut creamer again. Aaahhh! Perfect!
When it was time, the band popped open effortlessly. I t may sound trivial, but this always scores points with me!!
The flavor stayed consistent right down to the end. I do mean end….there aren’t many cigars I take down to the point of needing tweezers. Even though I ran out of cool places to put my fingers, the cigar did not heat up until the very end. This cigar was truly a joy to smoke. I smiled the whole way through it. They claim it to be a full bodied smoke. Perhaps with its heady effect, it might be. It is very flavorful, but the clean finish of each draw made it seem milder, in my opinion, than a “full” flavor cigar. It definitely lived up to its 94 rating in my book!! Run, don’t walk, to get yourself one of these to try!
