Pros: excellent construction, several flavor changes
Cons: initially a little grassy

Call me impatient. This is a cigar I've been wanting to try after hearing rave reviews on DWSC. I knew when this stick arrived today with the other tasting panel cigars I couldn't wait to smoke it. Now on to the review.

Conditions: Late evening, outside on our deck. No wind, cool - low 60s.

Pairing: Ice water.

Construction: Excellent. Firm roll, no soft spots, no hard spots. Had a nice spring from end to end. Cap was well applied and cut clean.

Appearance: Silky medium-brown wrapper.

Pre-light Draw: Very nice, just enough resistance.

Pre-light Aroma: Spicy with just a bit of bite.

Light/Burn: Lit easily although I didn't quite get a good light - my fault. Burned slightly uneven through the 1st third but corrected. Ash was firm, held on for about an inch and a half before I bumped it off.

First Third: A little grassy on the tongue (not my favorite) but had a very pleasant aroma.

Middle Third: the grassyness fades away. Transitions to a good, somewhat mellow tobacco flavor with a subtle spiciness.

Final Third: became creamy on the palate still with a good straightforward tobacco flavor. Found a pronounced nic kick near the end.

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Comments: Medium bodied smoke with a fairly short and not quite dry finish. Wasn't 'wowed' by the cigar but found it very intriguing. Didn't care for the initial grassiness but that went away quickly enough. Never got harsh. I believe this was my first experience with Costa Rican tobacco. I'd definitely like to try more. Need to try to pick up a few more to age and see how they compare.

Pros: A complex smoke, well constructed
Cons: None

It was well constructed, firm but smooth, wrapper was almost flawless and no marks on it, just one small vein along the length.

Pre-light, hayish smell at wrapper, sweet hay at foot. Draw was sweet with a slight tingle on tongue.

This was an excellent cigar, I have smoked a few of the different Bucanero bundle cigars and found they all tend to have a base grassiness to them, some stronger than others. I did not find it at all in this cigar.

This should be renamed to the Treasure of Bucanero. I believe this is a Costa Rican puro, it started out with a strong peppery flavor that mellowed out to a sweet slightly floral flavor. It kept changing flavors, a hint of cedar at one time, a bit of toast another. This kept me guessing as to what it wold be next.

The draw was a bit resistant but not in a bad way. This cigar was very, very enjoyable and now I wish I had another, the after taste left a peppery tingle on the tongue and is still there 10 minutes later, enjoyable to say the least.

The smoke after drawing on it came off profusley but quickly tapered to nothing which though the amount of smoke you actually drew in was vast. Kept the mosquitoes away, that's for sure.

This has been by far the best Buc cigar I have smoked though I do have a Salsa I am saving for a futre evening smoke.

I would definitely recommend this cigar to anyone and buy it for myself.

It left me relaxed and smacking my lips enjoying the aftertaste.

Now my question is, who has another one they wish to send me?

Definitely a cigar that Bucanero should be very proud of...

Pros: Smooth all the way to the end
Cons: Tang, grass taste first 1/3

I got home after a great vacation in San Diego and found all of the cigars from the cigar panels. Right away I went for this one,The Bucanero.

Outside: the day was nice, great LA weather, a little wind with temps in the 70's.

Pre-light look: This was a smooth but a bit rough wrapper covering this brown spike torp. The natural wrapper looked great.

Pre-light smell:Great smell from this stogie, nice chicken coupe and tobacco came from it.

Burn/ lite: Even though I lit this cigar with matches the burn was razor sharp with the smallest burn line. Great burn, I cant stress that enough, really

1st 1/3: I got this straight forward tobacco flav. right of the bat and then that was gone and the cigar got a light in body grassy-tang flav. that lasted for the entire first 1/3.

2nd 1/3:It began to get a deeper version of the grassy flav. and then I got a kind of deep tobacco taste that stayed on the pallet for most of the cigar 2nd 1/3.

3rd 1/3:The end wasnt very different from the rest of the cigar but once I reached the end I hit the Power House of this cigar. It was mld to medium until I hit the half way point in the last 1/3 and then it became medium to full

End Comments: The greatest part of this cigar was how it was so very smooth, very smooth from start to finish and even when I blew out from my nose it was smooth. I would love to smoke one of these in a few weeks or months. Im sure that in time these sticks would drop that grass flav.

Pros: Unique flavor
Cons: Fragile wrapper

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Coffee, spice
Scent at Foot: Spicy
Wrapper: Silky medium-brown wrapper that was very fragile and had a 1/2” split in the foot
Feel: Firm and consistent
Tongue: Spicy, tingle on edges of tongue
Flavor on Draw: Toasted nuts

Smoke

Taste: Slight grassiness and some spice but a bit on the mild side
Flavor Changes: I noticed some clove overtones past the one-third point
Strength: Mild-medium
Scent of Smoke: Slightly sweet aroma
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Never got hot

Draw: Firm
Finish: Short, dry finish
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Ragged burn, required constant touch-ups

This was my first experience with a Costa Rican puro and while I wasn’t fond of the initial grassiness, this cigar had a rather interesting flavor profile that piqued my curiosity. Unfortunately, I was distracted by a fragile wrapper that was constantly splitting. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this cigar and would try another one to see if the wrapper issues were just a fluke, but based on this one sample, I couldn’t recommend it.

Final Rating: 4.75

Pros: Beautiful, good construction, great easy pull
Cons: center burned a little slow

Construction: had a very open draw, had only one soft spot on the foot of the cigar, burned evenly, thin burn line, center burned slower then rest of cigar.

Appearance: nice even color, very small veins, almost none.

Nose: Nice barnyard, tobacco smell

1st third: Burned evenly, relitivly smooth w/ only a slight bitterness (good bitterness) good flavor, had a slight metal/copper taste that went well with the Heineken I was drinking.

2nd third: Had slight burn issuse thoughout the 2nd third, the draw was still amazing the slightly metalic taste from the 1st third dissapated, and the cigar started to strenghten.

3rd third: the burn issues strightened out, the flavors changed, and the cigar got stronger.

General Comments: good cigar, would smoke again, smooth through out the complete smoke
