Description: #102 Vegas de Santiago Don Luis Torpedo

We have created this cigar in memory of our late Cuban master Don Luis Lamas who was one of the 10 best in the world.

We have chosen the finest tobaccos available in Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the filler plus a special leaf for a more sofisticated taste with an Indonesian binder and a Connecticut wrapper from Ecuador.

Pros: Great construction, good burn.
Cons: Not much flavor. Very mellow.

Mystery Cigar # 102

This torpedo cigar had a very nice construction, nice wrapper(maybe connecticut) a few soft spots in the cigar, with what looked like a triple cap.
Prelight draw had a nice easy draw with a "barnyard"ish flavor. The actual toast and light was nice. There was absolutely no harshness on the first few puffs like alot of smokes. There was tons of nice white smoke.
Flavor was very, very mellow. It was as it was almost a "light" cigar. I could taste hints of leather, earthyness, and maybe some wood. The flavors did not change throughout the cigar. The strength was pretty much flat all the way down. There was a few times this cigar started to tunnel and burn uneven, but I did touch it up and had no more issues. Towards the end of this one I tried to heat it up and maybe get more flavor but none came. The ash was very light and flakey. I liked the cigar "overall" but wish there was more flavor to it. It would be a great "morning" stick.

I took some pictures while I was smoking this one!!

Pros: Nice Construction
Cons: Lacking Flavor

The construction on this cigar is very nice.

Pre-light flavors - Almost has a hint of artificial flavoring, has a bourbon hint to it. A lot of sweetness.

Draw- Great, very smooth and nice.

1st Third- The flavor was very light, lots of cool smoke. I think this cigar needs a bit more flavor, maybe some ligero????? Mmmmmm Ligero....

2nd Third- This cigar has a great burn...Razor sharp and very nice. The flavor is trying so hard to pick up but it just can't get there. Very creamy and cool but really could use a small kick.

Final Third- Heat is starting to pick up, and having a few burn issues. Not so much spice as harshness. I really wish this cigar would have had some fuller flavors.

Overall- This cigar has potential. Obviously the blender has created a very smooth cigar but it lacks complexity. I think for $2-$3 this would be an ok early morning smoke. The construction is great just needs some kick.

Pros: good draw, even burn, lots of smoke, multiple flavors
Cons: wrapper split and wrapper blemish

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: I noticed a distinct sweet scent.
Scent at Foot: Very much the same as the wrapper.
Appearance: (image of cigar)

Overall, I thought the appearance was fine. Wrapper had some sheen and was free from any large veins.

Wrapper: There was a noticeable blemish on the cigar wrapper near the head, and the torpedo head was a little rougher than I usually see.
Feel: The cigar felt firm and consistent from head to foot.
Tongue: Cool, sweet.
(Press tongue to newly cut end and note perceptions)
Flavor on Draw: Pre-light draw sensed some floral flavors, lilac and rose.

Smoke
Taste: (1) Cigar started out very mild and it was difficult to pick up much of anything. At about the 1/3 mark the cigar developed a pleasant flavor of oak and cedar with a little bit of grass. I also noticed a flavor I am unfamiliar with, but others may have described as "barnyard".

Flavor Changes: (image of cigar)

(2) After the halfway point, the cigar began to exhibit a little more spiceyness and became noticeably stronger. Perhaps a little bit of ligero? Flavor reminded me of some Nicaraguan cigars with a bit of ligero in them.

Strength: The strength ranged from mild-medium at the beginning and became more medium after the halfway mark.

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: The cigar burned well, with no problems with fingers and mouth.
Draw: Good. No issues with draw. Slightly resistent which is perfect.

Finish: Pleasant flavor with a relatively short to short-medium finish.

Had a wrapper problem near the burn line when I reached the last 1/3 of the cigar. The wrapper split. This did not greatly effect my enjoyment of the cigar, but it was unfortunate. I believe it indicated a problem with the wrapper or binder.

I liked that this cigar produced a lot of great flavorful smoke! Pairs well with Makers Mark Bourbon.

Final Rating: Re-read all your comments and notes above and consider them with your general understanding of cigars. Rate this cigar on a 0.1-10.0 scale using one decimal point. Consult the scale on the left. Note your score here:

I enjoyed the overall flavor of the cigar. Based on the construction, flavor and overall experience I would rate this cigar a 7.1 which places it in the very good category.

Pros: Nice looking wrapper.
Cons: Tight Draw, devoid of flavor.

This cigar was a torpedo with a smooth natural wrapper.

I cut the cigar and attempted a draw, it was really tight. I cut a few more times, but the draw did not improve. This was the first cigar of the day for me.

First Third: It burned evenly despite the tight draw. I was surprised at how little flavor the cigar had. I smoked up to the first third, but the tight draw and lack of flavor convinced me to put the cigar down.

Second Third: N/A

Third Third: N/A

Explanation:

First of all I really appreciate the cigar maker for send us the cigars in the blind tasting panel. So I feel a little guilty with this review.

I generally like a full flavored cigar. But I will also enjoy a mild cigar; this cigar fell below the mild category. The tight draw was also a bit of an annoyance. I thought this cigar lacked character and flavor. This cigar might not be for seasoned cigar smokers.

Pros: Good construction. Mild, unoffensive flavor
Cons: Lack of complexity

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Aged leather
Scent at Foot: Musty, slightly sweet tobacco
Wrapper: Silky, fine veining, medium brown
Feel: Firm
Tongue: Rich tobacco flavor
Flavor on Draw: Slight sweetness, slight tingle on the tip of the tongue

Smoke

Taste: This cigar had flavors of roasted coffee and bourbon with a slight mineral note
Flavor Changes: About the midpoint the sweetness disappears completely and I pick up hints of over-roasted coffee. Two-thirds of the way through the flavor becomes bitter.
Strength: Mild-Medium. Very mellow.
Scent of Smoke: Mild, inoffensive room note.
Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: This cigar never became hot.

Draw: Firm, deliberate draw
Finish: Short, slightly mineral finish
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: The burn started to get ragged about halfway through and the ash became flaky. Around the 2/3 point the wrapper developed a strange bulge and then split.

This was an average cigar. Nothing really bad about it but I would prefer something with a bit more strength and complexity. This would be a good cigar for someone new to premium cigars.

Final Rating: 5.5

Pros: smooth wrapper, sweet smelling smoke
Cons: tight draw, sour taste from wrapper

Blind Tasting Panel Review #102
?, Torpedo, Natural

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked on a lovely sunny morning paired with a cup of Starbucks house blend coffee and DWSC on my iPod.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Sweet cocoa scent from wrapper, mostly tobacco scent from foot.

Appearance: Well-rolled, smooth looking wrapper with lots of small veins. Natural, caramel color.

Feel: Good resistance to squeezing.

Pre-light draw: Tobacco and some earthiness with a bit of a bitter, ammonia taste. No tingling on tongue.

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Very bitter coffee taste at first that died a little bit after 1.5” or so. Mostly just basic tobacco flavors after that with maybe a slight bit of woodiness. Not much flavor added when exhaling through nose. Very sour taste from wrapper when held in the mouth.

]

Strength: Very mild other than aftertaste (see below).

Feeling: Good resistance to chewing.

Scent of smoke: Pleasant sweet (cocoa) smelling smoke.

Heat: None.

Draw & Burn: Tight draw and not a lot of smoke without a lot of effort.

Finish: Unpleasant tingly, sour aftertaste from wrapper. Not enjoyable to hold in mouth while smoking which I like to do. No dryness.

OTHER:
Ash: Good solid white ash that held nicely. Straight, even burn.

Duration: Due to the sour aftertaste and tight draw I stopped smoking this after about 1/3 of the way through (30 min)….my smoking time is too precious to smoke cigars I don’t enjoy

CONCLUSION:
This is a good looking cigar that has flavors that I did not enjoy at all. When I could get past the sour aftertaste all I got was basic mild tobacco. It did have quite pleasant smelling smoke. With some ageing this cigar might develop into an OK mild smoke but I doubt it would ever fit my taste preferences. Due to the tight draw and flavor issues I would not smoke this again nor would I recommend it.

FINAL RATING: 4.5/10

Cheers!

Pros: Very nice construction, decent ash, lots of flavors, nice finish
Cons: tight draw

Very nice smoke. Impressive, long lasting, lots of flavors and nice construction.

Pre light - The wrapper has a very strong smell of leather and barnyard, Im reminded of horses when I smelt it. I liked it. The foot had a less barnyard more sweetness scent to it. The wrapper was flawless, no veins, blemishes or marks of any kind. The taste on my lips was quite tangy and the prelight draw had some citrus hint to it.

After light - After toasting the foot, The light was perfect. Nice and complete. The smoke was plentiful and started a little flowery at first but quickly changed to a nice creamy, cedar, woody flavor. It kept the barnyard flavor throughout.

The flavors blended well through the entire cigar and improved as the burn drew closer to my lips. I continued to get lots of smoke until it was at the halfway mark , I then found that I was reheating the stick as I drew.

Im in the area of a medium body smoke with some mildness to it. I did however get a nice little buzz off of this smoke. Although the draw was a little tighter than I would have liked and Im used to a fuller body smoke, It was not annoying at all. The other aspects of this stick overpowered the draw/body.

The finish was not short enough to forget the smoke and not long enough to be annoying. The ash was firm and made it to about 2-3 inches with no flaking.

Overall I really liked this smoke and I wold probably buy some of these. Im thinking that this is in the $7 to $8 range. nice smoke and very impressive.

Pros: Construction - torpedo shape
Cons: green spot on wrapper - taste

This is one of my first reviews and I'm still a newbie to cigars so please bear with me.

Pre-smoke:
Scent of wrapper - tobacco and cedar
Scent of foot - reminded me something sweet, nectar?

Appearance: Very thin with a green spot - otherwise very nice - light colors with very small viens. Reminded me of a RP Edge Corojo Torpedo - too bad it didn't smoke like one.

Feel: Smooth slightly oily - soft spots slightly spongy
Flavor on Draw: Tingle on sides and back of mouth - somewhat bitter and sour.

Smoke
Taste: cedary and barnyard
Flavor Changes: Gets a little better halfway - richer and a little better tasting.

Strength: Mild

Overall it was an okay cigar - maybe it needed some age?
The construction was great, but the taste left much to be desired. The cigar also wasn't strong enough and left me wanting another cigar. I'm going to light up a La Gloria Cubana #4 now. I wouldn't want to try another one of these.

I gave it a 4/10.

Pros: Good construction, nice draw, clean crisp burn
Cons: a little on the mild side for my taste

Pre-smoke
Scent of Wrapper: Sweet with a hint of leather

Scent at Foot: Leather

Wrapper: Good condition with no tears or blemishes

Feel: Slightly firm, cut very cleanly

Tongue: Not noted

Flavor on Draw: distinct leather with a hint of sweetness

Smoke
Taste: Leather, wood and slight sweetness

Strength: Very smooth and creamy

Feeling: None noted

Scent of Smoke: Produced a good amount of smoke with a distinct sweet scent

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: overheated easily if drawn too hard or quickly, I think it is due to the light draw.

Draw: Very light draw

Finish: The finish was more to the moderate than mild side. Left a good taste with that slightly sweet after taste.

Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: Overall I liked the cigar even though it is much milder than my normal rotation. It would be a fine cigar to keep in the humidor for early morning or early afternoon. Although I noted a few flavors it was not a very complex cigar but with its generally mild flavors that was to be expected.

6

Pros: Good construction,
Cons: When wetting tip to cut, felt a gumminess on my lips

This would be a good starter cigar or for someone who enjoys the milder flavors. AS stated in con's, when I wet the tip to prepare it for cutting i felt a gummy coating on my tongue and lips from this. The tip started to unravel about 1/2 way thru but it repaired easily enough.

The wrapper was seamless and was rather attractive looking, only a couple small veins along the length.

There was a slight springiness to the feel and draw though not too hard did provide slight resistance.

The flavors I tasted in this cigar
First third: grass/hay, slight floral
Second third: wood w/ slight pepper taste
Last third: wood ending in a slight coal taste

After the last third I tasted a bite, sort of an acidic aftertaste, it was mild and went away rather quickly.
Though a little mild for me, it wasn't bad, I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase it but then again depending on the price it makes a decent yard cigar. But feel I could recommend this (depending on the price) to a friend or two.

Pros: Nice draw and excellent burn nice construction

Wrapper: so white spots
Feel: Rather firm, but spongy at the from the tip up about a inch or 2
Tongue: Rich and a bit tangy
Flavor on Draw: Fresh leather

Smoke
Taste:Tang taste with a lemon taste with and I think a hint of clove had a heck of a time trying to figure the taste out
Flavor Changes: None
Strength: Medium
Scent of Smoke: Rather muted tobacco aroma
Draw: free draw that yielded tons of smoke
Finish:sweet tang
Other Aspects of the Cigar Smoking Experience: excellent ash nice burn

Me myself I would smoke this again just to try and figure out the blend/taste

Pros: Awesome pre-cut smell
Cons: Very difficult to draw

Blind review. Torpedo, Natural.

ATMOSPHERE: Smoked outside in the early afternoon paired with fresh Alabama air.

PRE-SMOKE:
Scent: Excellent, almost Cuban smelling.

Appearance: Smooth, light brown natural wrapper. Great looking cigar, no blemishes

Feel: Light cigar. Very tightly packed though. Needed more Humi time, because I think it was immature.

Pre-light draw: Mostly wood\stale bark taste. Not too much on the palate.

SMOKE:
Taste & Flavor: Light wood flavor. Tough to find taste when you have to take 2-4 drags to get a proper draw. Very annoying.

Strength: Very mild and might be smooth if you could get a good draw. Some harshness at the end.

Feeling: Very light headed after working so hard on this one.

Scent of smoke: Stale wood chips in the fall.

Heat: Just about the right amount.

Draw & Burn: Loosey. This cigar needed more time to become a man. Burn was good, but I did have to relight 3 times.

Finish: Short, but a little better draw near the end.

OTHER:
Ash: Ok burn, I had to relight a few times though. No tunneling, just a little uneven.

Duration: Smoked until about 1.5” remaining in roughly 1.2 hour (I smoke slowly usually, but with the extra drags, it went faster).

CONCLUSION: A below average natural. I really had high hopes after smellng it fresh out of the cellopane. The draw or lack of was a killer for me. I really had to work to try to enjoy this cigar, and in the end it came up very short.

FINAL RATING: 4.0 - If you can't draw it, you can't enjoy it.

Pros: great construction and burn
Cons: flavor is not in my wheelhouse

A finely constructed cigar that lit effortlessly and maintained an excellent burn throughout the smoke. It delivered a good amount of smoke for about the 1 hour it lasted.

This review is short and sweet since my flavor preference is different than this cigar's flavor. The wrapper reminded of the CAO Odyssey rosado wrapper, of which I'm not a big fan. The cigar delivered a bitter flavor (maybe the grassy flavor mentioned in previous reviews) with a hint of pepper. Since these flavors do not appeal to me, I would highly recommend this cigar, to those who enjoy these flavors, based on it's fine construction, voluminous smoke and excellent burn.

Okay, that's 3 down and 2 to go. They both have the appearance and aroma of cigars that I fully enjoy.

Pros: Good draw. Nice smoke
Cons: Wrapper and burn issues.

I like stronger cigars and ones that are full of flavor. This cigar was just too mild for me.

I smoked this one early in the morning before golf. I had a little trouble lighting it but once I got it lit it there was a lot of smoke with a nice draw. The wrapper seems like it is unraveling ayt the burn line.

The flavors are very light and nothing jumps out at me. I do sense some woody notes but other than that I cant pick out many flavors.

Into the second half of this cigar and I am having some tunneling issues. I was able to fix the burn issue with a touch up from my lighter.

I was not a fan of this cigar. I just dont like a mellow cigar and this one was just that. I guess if you like the mild cigars this may be one to try but I dont think I would buy one of these.

Pros: Very good construction and burn
Cons: Not a lot of flavor

Scent of Wrapper: Tobacco, somewhat sweet

Apperance: Very nice construction, no blemishes.

Draw: Easy draw.

Sterngth: Mild-Medium, strengthed slightly half way.

Burn: Very even burn thoughout, no touch-ups.

Heat on Fingers and in Mouth: Heated up towards the last quarter.

A very nice looking cigar. This cigar burned nicely thoughout. It started out mild and stengthen slightly. However it was not very complex and the flavor was less than overwhelming. This cigar had no construction, draw or burn problems. A good early morning cigar, but do not make this one your final stick of the day as you will get nothing out of it.

Overall: 6.50/10.00

Pros: Easy draw and nice burn
Cons: Not much flavor or complexity

Blind Cigar #102

A torpedo with an oily, medium-brown wrapper with few veins. The prelight aroma contains both nutty and leather notes.

Cigar is burning well with a slightly uneven burn. Nut flavors are present within the first few puffs. Some notes of sweet wood are beginning to become apparent.

The ash is forming nicely and holding well to the cigar. The cigar is smoking very smooth and building into a solid, medium body. First ash falls flush with the foot.

The draw continues to be easy, and the finish is pleasant. I’m not really picking up other flavors, but I’m enjoying this as a lazy afternoon smoke. The sweet wood flavors are prominent.

I would rate this cigar as 3/6 smoke rings.

Possibly a Rocky Patel Vintage 1990?

Pros: Quality construction, even burn down to the nub
Cons: some bitter draws through the first half but cleared with burn purge

This cigar is a simple smoke and by that I mean that it burns easily and the draw was just right. The flavor of the cigar was mild and that also contributes to my label of this cigar as a simple smoke. The aroma was nice and the smoke plentiful. The appearance of the stick was excellent.

I would smoke this cigar again but would not put it on a go to list. The only negative experience I had was about 1/2 way through the cigar, I had a few draws that were very bitter and acrid tasting - I was able to fix this with a burn purge and the mild taste returned for the remainder of the smoke. Over all I was pleased with the hour spent smoking this cigar and would consider it time well spent. I give the smoke a 5.5 rating.

Pros: smooth
Cons: not a fan of torpedo

Scent of wrapper: Good

Wrapper: Consistent, nicely wrapped

Taste: Woody, but otherwise mild

Heat/Burn: burn was a little uneven

Draw: Nice draw- just fine

Finish: Pleasant

I'm not a fan of torpedos yet, but this was a nice cigar.
